I am comparing the signing of two ‘older’ midfielders. Waddle came from Scottish high fliers …..er Falkirk. Clayton has come from Doncaster.

If you can’t see that comparison, then I cannot really help you further.

    It isn't ‘Ludicrous’.

    Hi Serg,

Chrissy Waddle, Stuart McCall, Neil Redfearn, Matty kilgallon, Dean Saunders and Peter Thorne (amongst others), all waving hello, along with Jones!

All signings are a gamble and, mid season, who lets a performing player leave? We’re shopping in the bargain bin and beggars can’t be choosers - we have to hope he clicks for Hughes and is the combative demon we need.

Not sure how you reach this conclusion - the others are mainly young kids on loan. He’s worked with Derbyshire before.

has he worked with Clayts? Gent will know of him from Boro though - played more there than anywhere else in his career?

Age is one debate, quality and ability is another. Yes it is completely ludicrous to compare him to England International and European Cup runner up Chris Waddle.

Next you will be saying the Saudis signed Ronaldo aged 38.....

I think the point Rod is making is Waddle was at Falkirk. Seemingly washed up and finished with no other takers. We took a risk and it worked. Waddle showed he still had it. Clayton could do the same.

    Hi Bords

Clayton has nowhere near the career or quality they did - Jones aside.

Donaldson, Henry, Taylor, Evans who are all recent and not from 15-20 years ago waving back atcha.

    The end.

Clayton never ever had it like Waddle...and Waddle was at Falkirk a month. He wanted to move back south of the border. He made 33 PL appearences the season before!!!

This is Bradford city, we have fans that completely dismiss a player before the ink on his contract has dried. Give the guy a chance, what has happened at other clubs is irrelevent, its what he now does for us that matters. Its till the end of the season, it does not work on his way he goes.

Im not dismissing him as a player. I am dismissing it as a signing with intent on promotion.

Have you been asleep the last decade? We have seen these signings time and time again and guess what - we are in L2.

    Forgive me for being cynical.

Comes across well. Level headed. Keeps fit and eats properly. Sounds like he's up for it. We'll see in a couple of matches time

This could be the perfect signing.

Smallwood to get the ball to Clayton, to make the play.

    Can he take a corner?

Theoretically, this could be a higher level midfield pairing.

The worry is we'll be too slow... But with Crich in the back line we might be okay.

But the fact remains. No one had signed him so he had to go to Falkirk. Spin it how you want.

    Bang on mate.

If Donny need a high energy pressing midfielder, he would clearly be the wrong player for them.

That doesn't make him wrong for us

    Ha ha.

The point is, you cant just take their age and assume they are washed up. Granted your examples were shite, but so are countless lads in their 20’s we’ve signed.

we needed a hard b*****d and, for that purpose, id rather him - a wily old hand - than a teenage who is 10 stone wet through and gets bullied.

Out of favour, loans or freebies all we can afford.

Peter Thorne, Gary Jones, Matt Killgallon was 32 when he joined, we have had players join towards the end of their playing career's who have done well. We have young players join who have been utter shite, we have paid money for players who were loved elsewhere and again have been shite for us, every signing irrelevent of age is a gamble and i can assure you i am wide awake, just willing to give someone a chance and not write them off before they have kicked a ball

We never learn. This division is about pace fitness and physicality with players who can get wide and pass quickly. We seem to be signlng up the old age version.

Karl Henry did play against Walsall, can still remember freezing my balls off. Admittedly it was as a sub like.

Exactly, some people on here wouldn’t be happy if we signed Kevin De Bruyne.
He’s an experienced pro, exactly what we need to drag us out of this league.
We don’t need kids who are still wet behind the ears who will feck off as soon as a club from a higher league come looking.
