With regards to this incident I wonder what has coloured people's opinions and led to the blame seemingly being taken away from this driver to it being the fault of the fans walking in the road, and the club/council/police?

I dont think sitting in an open road is ever really an effective method of protest

Try debating the effectiveness with the unfortunate people of London.

I’m not sure if park and ride would be an option or supporter buses only to ferry fans to and from the stadium. I’ve parked on the pavement near the sawmill in the past and made sure I don’t reduce the width of the path in the process. I might have to think again and arrive earlier to park on the road or park elsewhere.

Exactly this. The risk isn't folk walking on the road, thats a by product of having a 25,000 capacity stadium in an area that clearly didn't envisage the car use of the 21st century when it was first built. The risk is pretty much confined to the arsehole element of society who drive like idiots. So for that short period of time, for 23 times a year, make the 'dickheads' take another route. Because lets face it, who in their right mind wants to try and drive through thousands of people on a Saturday afternoon? All you would be doing is eliminating the source of the risk. I still can't believe in this day and age of health and safety scrutinization that it hasn't already been done. Shouldn't be up to folk like us to make decisions that people get paid to make.

Sheffield United don't seem to have a problem getting an 'A' road (the A621, Bramall Lane) closed off for matches, as well as several other roads.

If people are so aware of their personal safety then walk on the pavement and leave the roads to cars. Surely getting home 5 minutes earlier isn't worth risking your life or take the slightly longer route via Manningham Lane? People need to take responsibility for themselves

I saw the aftermath of the incident on Saturday.
IMO there were 2 cars involved as both turned in the refuse sites gates to drive back towards VP.
One was a grey BMW and I can't remember the other car.
Both cars drivers were white and the BMW had a few passengers who I couldn't make out clearly enough.
I saw the lad who had been punched up against the wall being seen to by fellow City supporters but didn't see his grandad who was apparently attacked too.
Firstly assault is a criminal offence, its a horrible world we live in these days and especially on the roads I see daily a total lack of decency and a lot of anger, but getting out of your car to physically attack somebody should be dealt with appropriately.
As I park at the bottom of Bolton lane I have to walk along Midland Road after matches to get back to my car.
Fans just stroll down the centre of the road thinking its a pavement or a pedestrianised zone.
The cars are parked up on the sides blocking the paths which inevitably lead to crowds being herded into tight spaces behind the vehicles and it can take time to progress down to Queens Road.
The whole after match set up is a farce.
    Council, Police, fans, drivers.
Everyone is to blame for how it is.
We don't walk down the middle of Queens Road so why do many feel they can walk down the middle of Midland Road and not come across an angry motorist who might be trying to get somewhere through an open road that isn't restricted apart from Mr 'im ok to walk down here'.
Its not ok to walk in the middle of a road, its not ok to drive at a person, its not ok to assault somebody, its not ok to put lives at risk by not doing your jobs and closing roads, diverting traffic if you are a police officer.
Its a total breakdown of the morals and standards we should be living our lives.
But this suits a government and establishment who want nothing less than a divided society.

Part of the reason for Bramall Lane being closed is that the turnstiles back out onto the road and the pavement isn't wide unlike Midland Road then the bits of Midland Road that do have turnstiles backing out onto the road are already closed

For me to get from the kop to Midland Road i have cross the road, what do you expect me to do? Float over? Why do you think the police and council stopped the traffic on Rooley Avenue for rugby matches? Thats right, for the safety of the public. And that was only for about half an hour.

Why is it that you are able to cross over a road safety in the rest of your life but as soon as you are in a football crowd you lose all ability to do that? If you are coming from the Kop if the part of the road by the away fans isn't closed you could cross there where there is no traffic or walk up Midland road on the stadium side then follow the road around until you get to some traffic lights and cross at them. It might take 5 minutes longer but surely that's worth it if it keeps you alive.

When you've had a death in the family involving road traffic you might think a little differently.

Similar thing nearly happened on Bowland Street. Two youfs speeding down there and a bit of a shouty standoff but they then just drove off

If traffic can be stopped on Rooley Avenue for a 3,000 crowd on a busy road, it's not beyond the wits of the matchday controllers to get Midland Road (little more than a cut through) shut an hour before and half an hour after matches.

I don't know if they still stop it, but they certainly did back in the day.

That would probably push me to stick to the paths and crossing at lights than risking walking down middle of an open road

To be honest I do, but I make sure I move out of the way of cars. There are usually very few coming from Queens Road towards VP so it is easy to move out of the way if paying attention.

I don't walk on the road as its dangerous, especially when it gets dark. But then i'm usually one of the last out of the ground as i can't be bothered getting caught up in the bottleneck getting out. So when i get out the footfall isn't as busy. But human nature dicates most folk don't think like that.

Not closing Midland Road is indefensible.

I know some of those side streets are blocked off from the top, but so what? It's three hours a day, 25 days a year (assuming we can't win any cup games lol).

Not too much to ask to prevent stuff like this, and worse potential injuries and accidents.

    SORT IT OUT.
