We signed the great Robinson/Lavery connection long before we sold Crankshaw who we sold after the window shut

Don't think that money went on scouts either think both Sparks and Adams have said separately we can spend that money and any other money the club brings in

apologies @TallinnBantam@TallinnBantam i was more responding too another post -
“So do you want to spend the Crankshaw money on a new player or a new manager”

Am not sure the money we received for crankshaw would get us either of them

No wonder we need a scout network then, if they are tasked with bringing in 3 to 4 players with a total of 10k spend :) Hope they've thoroughly analysed the Sunday Leagues! :)

I could have written much more on the subject, but thought that was enough to start with!

Input: Coach/manager (C/M) certainly has input into recruitment -- I need a CH / X would be a good fit for us / Y is trouble, don't want him -- but that's just one voice in the ?weekly meetings between C/M, DOF, and other relevant staff. The C/M's main function will be to study the opposition and prepare the side accordingly. Recruitment and management are each full-time jobs on their own.

Style: It could be set by the owner/board, provided they are interested and knowledgable enough. But if the football club is just another unit in a big multinational corporation -- or the owner lives abroad and is not really interested in such matters -- it comes down to the CEO and, especially, the DOF/GM. CEO candidates should be able to lay out their vision to the owner/board when that position is being filled; thereafter, they implement it by hiring compatible staff. I'm assuming here the CEO does actually know something about football as well as business; if not, then it all really falls on the shoulders of the DOF/GM. Either way, the DOF/GM then hires appropriately.

Time lag: That'll always be there, to some extent, and maybe you will miss out on a player. But when you have a part of the organisation dedicated to recruitment, this problem should be minimised.

Failure: Eventually, the C/M will leave, one way or another. If the organisation has a set philosophy, then yes, the next C/M should be compatible with that. If there is a run of failure, over many seasons and C/M's, then the DOF/GM's status will have to be evaluated. And so on... the CEO is not immune either, if the failure is bad enough, or prolonged enough. The owner/board will have their say in all this, too, given the financial implications.

Player pool: I suppose it is unavoidable that one might favour players one already knows, but one of the benefits of this kind of organisation will be that recruitment doesn't come down just to the whims of one person.

Much more can yet be said on this...

@borderlescott@borderlescott, shall we scrub last night's result from the winless run statistic? I know you don't like including cup games and, it was only the inconsequential FA Cup! Also naughty Exeter, gave us every chance by starting with seven reserves and you don't like including games where some reserves play. I'm trying to find a positive for you. Were our xG stats better? Did the rain blow into our eyes second half? Or were we just out thought by a better manager who got his tactics spot on?

We are basically back where we were in the late 2000's hoping to luck in like we did when Parkinson was appointed after we'd initially passed him over in favour of Taylor, then gone a completely different way in appointing Jackson and trying Archie's "development squad" before going back to him to clear up their mess.

100 % agreed, when Adams isn't managing things he shouldn't be managing, like scouts, like his CEO, etc, he might be able to focus on the job.

I've been banging the DOF drum for some time.

It is ESSENTIAL given the state of our senior management team, will keep Sparks in his job doing what he CAN do (rather than what he clearly, clearly can't), will take pressure of Rupp, and will allow Adams/AN Other to manage players not personel.

This isn't rocket science. Rupp & Sparks don't know what they're doing. That isn't an attempt to insult them, it's a bare, basic fact of the matter.

And absolutely nothing has changed by putting Sparks in Rhodes' position.

Rhodes was hopeless picking managers and ensuring continuity, so is Sparks.

I dont care about the cup. I care about our league results, and they havent been good enough.

mock about xG all you want but those who know, know, and laugh at those who have their head stuck up their own backside.

How about the wind and rain (xWR) in the players faces? How do our statistics compare on that?

    Clueless.

there’s two different things going on here.

if you are questioning the use of xG in football jog on. That’s not even up for debate. Its ubiquitous these days.

if you are debating why city are shit and not performing as well as our numbers suggest we should (and they reinforce observations that anyone with a functioning pair of eyes can see….we dominate most games but lack a cutting edge) that’s a completely different matter.

i’m wasting my time replying either way.

Religionists laugh at people who don’t believe
Anti vaxxers laugh at those who take a vaccine

There are always two sides to an argument, xG has its place, but it’s not the be all and end all of football.

    Crankshaw money and January window.

    Difficult time to recruit.
Nobody available who fits our style.
Nobody available who improves the squad we have
We’re not going up or down so we’re saving the money for the summer.
We’re happy with what we have, when Eisa, Angol, Cook, Cooke, Canavan, POC, Sutton and Songo’o all recover from their hamstring injuries they’ll be like new signings.
We don’t want to be the next Bury or Macclesfield. Be grateful for what you have, Stefan supports this club and loves it more than you. Buy more season tickets, sponsorship and membership of the Chris Withe club or we might go out of business and that will be your fault.

I know its tongue in cheek mike, but from what they have been saying as of late we are going to get some players.

whether they change their mind or get dross as per remains to be seen...
