Oh, damn, I heard about it and assumed someone must have stopped their car in front of a tank... having actually watched it, that is surreal. What kind of a nasty, cruel piss of crap was driving that tank.

Someone, you know who, has been ranting about Ukraine being run by neo-nazis, drug-addicts and that Russia will set about de-nazification of the country.

Ukraine is headed by a Jewish man whose grandfather fought with the soviet army against nazis in WW2.

My knowledge of nazification harks back to a crazed dictator invading an East European country to expand his empire, more than 80 years ago.

What is difficult to understand is how these actions are supported by their people.

May be propaganda, but it does seem like it’s not going all Russia’s way. Wars don’t always go the bigger aggressors way. Russia in Afghanistan, US in Vietnam, western allies in Afghanistan etc.

Joining NATO is not just a name, You have to commit a minimum of 2% of your countries GDP and commit to your country defending all the other members whether you agree or not on the circumstances,
NATO understands that if it gets involved with Russia in the Ukraine the chances of a nuclear conflict with the loss of millions of lives is extremely high, They are already pushing it supplying arms to them,
Putin has done a terrible thing invading Ukraine before talks were finished even though he felt it right but NATO involvement is a really risky thing as war would escalate throughout the west including the UK

Maybe a minor win but an unexpected one, China abstained from voting in favour of Russia last night in the security council. It at least shows they aren’t up for backing boots on the ground type wars and means Russia are very much alone.

Poland refuse to play Russia in a World Cup qualifier, they shouldn't be a need, FIFA should have kicked them out of the 2222 World Cup in Qatar.
Sports organisations have to hit the Russian people by taking competitive sport away from them.

I disagree it makes a big difference to their ability to wage war if it gets to the stage where there are mass riots around the country. That and huge economic sanctions would cripple moral and their ability to wage war. It also effects soldiers on the front line if they’re worried about family back home being punished by a government which they are fighting for.

There is every reason we should exclude Russia from every thing possible. A fed up unmotivated population is no good when at war. The thing we shouldn’t do is attack or bomb them and give them chance to be victims, the blitz was a huge mistake by Hitler and strengthened British resolve not weakened it. Let Russians know there is a way out of it if they pull out and encourage peace.

Most Ukrainian weapons are from Russia, The Russian Tanks Etc have white markings to identify them so they do not shoot at themselves, Lorries etc have a white stripe down the side and heavy armour and tanks have a white Z on them, No marking means they are Ukrainian. ( Although reports of Ukrainian's marking there own Equipment white to fool the Russians )

Seems that it was actually a Ukranian anti tank vehicle that was shot at by Russians, lost control and accidentally ran over the car. There's so much misinformation and propaganda going on its unreal. I saw something this morning, highlighting a photograph of a Ukranian woman crying over her dead, was actually a still shot from a 2016 Hollywood war film.

Being on the border to Russia over here in Estonia, it is a tad worrying, but I'm trying not to believe everything that fits my agenda. Big protests today in Tallinn, with thousands in attendance, but I've a feeling that it's people protesting against Putin, rather than support for the Ukranians. He really does need someone doing a number on him.

A few general comments with the replies to your posts:

First, a big tip of the hat to the Ukrainians, especially the soldiers and civilian volunteers for their resistance, and all for their endurance. If anyone was in any doubt, it is clear where their sympathies lie. There should be no hesitation now about putting Ukraine on the road to EU membership.

An equally big tip of the hat to Ukraine's political leaders, who have remained to lead from the front. Even Poroschenko is there, despite his problems with the current government. This is courage, and leadership. Leaders of other countries take note. That said, I do hope that alternate arrangements have been made, so that if Kiev and/or Zelensky falls, the government will continue, presumably from Lviv.

As the Estonian President Karis said yesterday, this is not the Russian people's war, but Putin's. There is a deep discontent in Russia today, amongst elites and the rest, with Putin's government, but for obvious reasons it has had to stay underground. One hopes that the discontent will become more widespread, and public. I see now that the number of arrests for dissent has risen to over 4000, and that protests have occurred in 44 cities so far.

It is, has been, and always will be, worrying for anyone living in any country bordering Russia, until the mindset of the leadership changes. You can never be certain of the future, must always have an escape plan, and must be ready to drop everything and flee.

I think that there have to be serious questions about the state of Putin's mind. He is not the same, shrewd, wily character of the past. The other day in America a ranking Republican -- and thus one who gets the intelligence briefings -- said there was something "off" about Putin. The threats to use nukes, made twice now, is nothing new; he has made such threats before. Still, it is a worrying indicator of his state of mind. There is no threat to Russian territory from the "West;"
not even the US wants to invade -- I'd say the only real threat of invasion Russia has is from China. This, again, is manufacturing pretexts.

And Putin his miscalculated in several major ways. First, in thinking that Ukraine would roll over and surrender, as the Crimea and Luhansk/Donetsk operations had worked. But, at least in L/D, he had majority Russian populations to deal with; no surprise they'd be friendly. But he seems to have expected the Ukrainians and the Ukrainian armed forces to be the same.

Second, leading from the first: logistics and training of the invasion army.

Third, in thinking the West would be weak. Instead, he has unified and strengthened the West -- Europe and North America in particular, along with NATO and the EU. He now has, all along his borders, much more of exactly what he didn't want. And I note that Germany is now going to boost its military in mighty fashion, and see about building LNG terminals and finding alternate sources of energy.

It is also good to see a vindication of the intelligence departments of the US/UK, after poor work in the recent past. Thanks to the release of information about Putin's plans, the whole world now sees clearly who has been telling the truth, and who has been lying. For the US, I read the other day that there was a deliberate shift in emphasis once Biden took over, from counterterrorism operations, in which one was always reacting to the past, to focussing on future threats, namely Russia and China. That change has paid off.

I really hope Putin gets assassinated I firmly believe he’ll use his nuclear weapons, other than them Russia aren’t actually a particularly powerful force and they’ve lost to countries smaller than them in previous wars such as Japan well before they became a modern state.

I believe Putin has become like Hitler in his last few years, with these evil tyrants after a long time they often think they’re invincible and get disillusioned with reality, Putin was a smart leader as Hitler was at one time but like Hitler I think his mental health has gone off a cliff and he’s ready to enter the history books forever for all the wrong reasons. This makes him extremely dangerous to us all. I worry Ukraine could be the least of our worries soon.

I agree, the resilience of the Ukrainian people is remarkable. I do wonder how we’d fare in a similar situation; I think our society has become pitifully weak and absent of what really matters in terms of where we spend our time and mental energy.

My worry is, what’s Putin’s state of mind? I genuinely think he expected a largely unopposed and easy ride to Kyiv. I don’t think he expected anything like the resistance they’ve been met with, nor the international condemnation and support that Ukraine has received. He previously made a serious threat to NATO and any countries who might been tempted to ‘intervene’. Assumption was that he deemed ‘intervention’ to mean the deployment of military resources into Ukraine, but the supply of equipment, aid and imposition of sanctions could very easily be deemed ‘intervention’. The ratcheting up off Nuclear readiness is hugely worrying - whether he has public backing or not, he still has the military, the police, the media behind him. And I don’t think he gives a sh*t about how he’s perceived. I think he’s unhinged. There’s more than a touch of Hitler about him - and if Hitler had access to Nuclear weapons, he’s almost certainly have used them, even if it meant the destruction of his own people (at the point at which he became desperate).

    Worrying times.

The sad thing is, the more the Ukranian's resist and fight back, the more lethal force Putin will use. He's not going to let them win.
