Which players do we think Mark Hughes will want to keep for next season?

Watt is a definite. I think Cooke, Vernham, Sutton, Foulds and Paudie. Might be tempted with Evans due to his versatility. Other than that we have a lot of rebuilding. From what we have seen we don't need much more from what we currently have to have a very good side for this division so sometimes having to start totally afresh with new players and drum in the style and tactics might not necessarily be good. Add in a big ball winning midfielder, maybe Walker and a genuinely quick and pacey striker with movement and one who can hold up play and we have a promotion winning side.

 

I remember Nhaki Wells getting "injured" for City in match and less than 7 days later he was racing around in Town shirt like a Jack Russell.

 

Diamond's Sunderland contract is to 2024.

Sadly, not having a direct link to Mark Hughes’s prefrontal cortex, I can only speculate who I think he should keep or not. But thanks for the CAPITALS.

 

Paudie is the first one we should be keeping

 

O'Donnell - no
O'Conner - definitely but he could go to league one
Foulds - definitely
Hendrie - maybe but we already have Threlkeld and Cousin-Dawson
Sutton - doubt it
Watt - definitely but could go to a higher division
Evans - no
Cooke - probably
Vernam - definitely
Robinson - no
Angol - no
Lavery - no
Jamie Walker - if we can afford him

There are 5 or 6 to keep. Watt, Vernam, Cooke, Sutton, possibly O'Connor and Foulds as backups.

But its really about who we bring. I don't think we have anyone who's irreplaceable

 

I think Paudie, Watt and Vernham will be offered deals but could leave if they get L1 interest. First two especially.

I’d keep Cooke and Foulds. Hendrie on a year deal maybe.

 

Of those, I can't imagine Sutton or Foulds been on massive wages so maybe worth keeping as squad players. I think the others may have higher demands but happy to keep them if the price is right

 

Its a good point. Its easy enough for us as fans to debate who should stay and who should go, but you can only really rationalise that if you have a view of the players wages. Take O'Connor for example. He's a fairly average L2 Centre Back who I think is worth keeping. But we signed him in L1 I think? If he's on League 1 wages, there are likely much better ways to use that money.

 

Same applies to Evans. Been great for Hughes but one of our higher earners, so a parting of ways seems inevitable

 

I actually think he might stay. Clearly not on the 3k per week hes apparently on though.

big rebuilding job in the Summer for all concerned.

 

Any chance of a Nigel Pepper type player? Our midfield would be snapping with him in the middle.

 

They'd be my four as well, but I don't think Paudie or Vernam will be here next season, IMO
