I think we should be building for the future, it would be a mistake if we are only looking at trying to escape LG 2 in my view. Promotion as soon as possible should be our aim, but I am not sure we can do that in one season. Would love it if we did, but if we haven’t put solid plans in place for the future we might struggle again.

I very much doubt that can be done without blowing all next seasons budget and I am sure there will be some still here Mellor and hopefully Scannell as well for instance. Some of the younger pros will be cheaper to remove and along with all the loans and short contracted players gone there will be scope to build a decent team

    You hope Scannell is here?

Crikey, spending huge wages on a guy who hasnt played all season let alone looked like creating or scoring.

    Talk about poor value.

Surely we have to usher him out the door.

True but It’s worth the risk for a player of his quality

Not if he plays no more than a dozen games he isn’t.

That's the issue with Scannell, well that and his Championship level wage!

Who in their right mind would be willing to take a punt on Scannell with his recent injury record and fitting him into a potential new club's wage structure? Unless we come to some kind of (expensive) arrangement with either him or a potential new club, he could well be on our payroll next season whilst again playing very few games at VP. Despite my own views on his undoubted talents at this level, I don't see him being value for money next season in the khazi league.

I doubt this team is gonna be "fixed" in one summer transfer window. 2 year contract for Bowyer should mean he's given 2 years to get us firing again. Unless the absolutely unthinkable happens.

Scannell could look like Messi in League 2 if he managed to stay fit. That is a big ‘if’ though.

It would be a gamble to keep paying him the wages he is on and just hoping he doesn’t get injured.

Scannell has played 316 games in his career whic is a lot more than some players. If he moves it will probably cost us better to keep him and look after him properly

He's only played once for them this season though and getting on a bit now so probably a bit rusty. Also, George Miller did nearly as well for them last year (8 in 19) but hasn't repeated that kind of form with us. Maybe the service they were getting last year had more to do with their success....... perhaps we should be looking at their midfield instead?

Agreed - GB said this won't be sorted in 1 transfer window and if you think of all the issues that need addressing we need to be realistic that it will be impossible to replace all the players we want to in one pre-season. The key for me is seeing a clear picture of a structure to what is happening and evolving at the club - we need to see a 'team' in its truest sense being built again with a plan on how it is going to play, not just a bunch of misfit individuals.
Flying Duck - I hope you meant the 'unthinkable' as a positive outcome, i.e. we will be at the top end next season (couldn't bear the other option) ;):)

Didn't John Docherty bring both Sean McCarthy and Phil Babb to the club and we made good money on the both of them.

He did Bronco, but it doesn't disguise the fact the football was v.tepid under him. The worst in my memory back to the mid eighties. I'm sure other go further (incl. you) back.

What bad days ;) when the goal machine McCarthy was banging em in left right and center , I think Phil Babb originally came to Valley Parade as a centre forward left for £500,000 that was a lot of money in them days and Coventry played him as a centre half and sold him to Liverpool for £3.6 million, I believe we got £200,00 + for Sean when he went to Oldham.

Yeah we did, eventually. He had a decent run at left back first though and eventually played at the back again (centre half I think) before moving to Coventry.

I think it was either Stoke or Oldham away and I'm presuming we had a few injuries so stuck him upfront.

I thought he was great at left back, can’t remember him playing up front. I was really sorry to see him go, thought he was a really good player.
