We haven’t got an attacking midfielder who gets in the box and scores goals

 

We haven't got one who can win the ball to give it to the player we haven't got to score the goals either.

 

Currently think the hole behind is a bigger priority

 

We have loads of midfielders but none who can score is guess we’d need rid of akpan before we sign another deep midfielder

 

He doesn't have to be deep? A box to box who can tackle like a Gary Jones is the missing ingredient. I'd also love a Nathan Doyle type right now if we can find one.

 

I agree we could do with better than what we have but at the moment we have 4 that are supposed to do that job but no technical midfielders that’s why we can keep the ball

 

I’m pretty sure one of the hold ups in bringing in a midfielder is GB was hoping to secure Matty Longstaff on loan but unfortunately, his profile has blown up pre-season and he’s now on Steve Bruce’s radar and has an outside chance of making the match day squads, which is a shame for us as he’d be perfect. Energetic, box to box ball winner. Elder Longstaff talked positively about GB developing his game. There will L1 teams competing to bring him in and even if we did manage to get him on loan it’d probably be with a January recall.

 

January recall option is the norm now I thought?

 

£400k was mooted and teams like Norwich and Wolves were watching him according to the press.

So again, let's agree we would have gotten a decent sum for a player that left for free and now have a left back who is currently doing much greater things than we currently are.

That's my logic. Its based on hindsight which I said from the very start.

 

Leigh played in the Dutch top flight, now a regular in the SPL. Meredith rumoured to be sacked for being a coke head.

Meredith was always going for free. No intention of signing a new deal. The signing on fee too much to ignore. Instead we missed out on a transfer fee and a decent youth player.

All things considered we made a mistake...

 

It would only have been worth keeping Leigh had we got rid of Mezza - but at the time, that would have weakened us.

Leigh is good, and showed potential, but needed the game time we couldn't offer.

Even in hindsight, it's hard to agree Mezza should have gone.

 

I don't know who edits Teamtalk? They're writing that Calum Cooke is having a medical today with a view to a loan signing.

How reliable are they?

 

Not sure.

 

If he can hold that ball in midfield and pass it out to the wings or forward, it will be an upgrade on what we have. We will have to wait and see.

 

If the rumoured names are correct then it seems Bowyer thinks midfielders who are comfortable on the ball are more of a priority than an enforcer type?

 

If this goes through, then what next for McCarten? This is the position he's meant to be playing in. I know he can play striker, but seems like Patrick (even Patrick!) is ahead of him. I'd be looking to offload him ahead of Akpan, as he's probably more marketable.
