Mellor won't play centre back unless he is needed there in an emergency, only played there because Paudie was not fit enough and to accomodate Henley one half and Nortey the other, so I wouldn't read into that Bowyer is going to play him at centre back in League 2.

To be fair to him OConnor looked ok as well. It will be different test in the league though for all of them with Arial bombardment

Agreed he did look decent Park, however as you said it will be different gravy come league 2 football, when he is facing the likes of large, older, more physical opponents, something which he failed at last season (thinking of one of them, Portsmouth away he couldn't cope). I just think with the defenders we have and with Mellor as 4th back up in an emergency behind Paudie, BRE and French we have enough. I'd offload AOC just because of last season not looking up to it and his attitude being questionable. Added to that his contract being long and possibly a high earner. Same with Doyle as well if we can bring this Stevens in from Peterborough.

Wow, I thought Taylor looked way off when he came on. Was running round in circles for a bit and looked very out of shape. Can’t see where he’d fit in, unless he takes Akpans place. Norty looked alright I think. Tracked back and got a few blocks in. But to be fair, we’re not gonna come up against a passing team like that this season, unless we go on another famous cup run!

Believe me Taylor is more than hard enough to cope.

You ok with us trying to play out from within our own box? I'm all for playing football and not just hoofing it but from within our own box is far too dangerous for some of our players.

Not French and Paudie based on what ive seen of them. Its the Midfield that needs good control. I think Palmer is the right guy.

Palmer looked to have a good touch and at times he should have been the player picking the ball up instead of giving to a centre half in our own box.

Palmer looked class in spells that he was in possesion and his free kicks caused Liverpool problems, even though we were offside. It's exciting to think how he fared yesterday and how he would look like against league 2 oppositions.

I'm fine with it, we have players comfortable on the ball. Yesterday got a bit messy as we played a side who along with man city are the best pressers on the planet, their speed was frightening and light years away from anything we'll face this year.

I think we and other teams will concede a lot more goals playing out like this.

Yes I am. If we make mistakes we make mistakes. It will benefit us far more in the long run a nd over the 90 minutes of each game.

It’s clear we are signing ball players. Why bypass them and “lump it”?

Like @bantam2708@bantam2708 says, nobody will press us as well as a team like Liverpool.

It’s a myth. I’d like you to count how many times we concede from aimlessly hoofing it back to the opposition.

The only reason people see it as a poor way is because you usually lose the ball and they are in on goal.

However eventually they will keep coming at us when we lump it. We might aswell play it around and keep possession. Will benefit us far more in the long run and as we hopefully move back up the leagues.

It’s an English default panic setting when we are passing in our own half/box. Remember the old classic, don’t pass it across goal. What a load of shite

Yep, all those different fonts will play havoc next year. Especially with the scoreboard.

I'd rather we lost the ball in the other half than on our 6 yard line.

In League 2/1 what normally happens is you play it to a centre half, who plays it square who then plays it back or back to the keeper who eventually boots it forward anyway.

I'm not suggesting we don't play out, I'm all for it but playing out from within your own back is a disaster waiting to happen.

The only reason people see it as a poor way is because you usually lose the ball and they are in on goal. - that's the issue.

That's true but a team pressing will always catch you out.

But what good is hoofing it and the ball coming straight back at you? If we have the quality to control games then that's what we should be doing.

    I disagree.

An alert Striker is more likely to find an extra half yard, per chance a one touch strike at goal, whereas in MF, the opposition are often happy to see a sideways pass, so long as you are not gaining ground.

But that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying playing out from within your own box is dangerous, I'm not saying boot it forward.
