    A quick check reveals 6 clubs that got promoted back to the Football League at the first attempt:
    1. Lincoln City as champions in 1987/88;
    2. Darlington as champions in 1989/90;
    3. Shrewsbury Town as play off winners in 2003/04;
    4. Carlisle United as play off winners in 2004/05;
    5. Bristol Rovers as play off winners in 2014/15; and
    6. Cheltenham Town as champions in 2015/16.
    Only Cheltenham Town could be described as getting back relatively comfortably at the first attempt, as they won the National League by 12 clear points.

    I'm not convinced that Herr Rupp even understands that relegation is an option, let alone exactly what the disastrous consequences would be, especially the need to pay £375,000 a year rent on a 25,000 capacity stadium that shames a lot of Championship clubs.

    It's said clubs love coming here as it's their cup final. That view is arrogant giving the number of times the L1 & L2 clubs have been here in the recent past, it might have been true the first time they came and for the league new boys, but in the National League, where a super stadium is one like The Shay, every single club who comes here will raise their game a notch and our chances of getting out are low.

    Rupp needs to wake up and go talk to the Chairmen at Notts County, Stockport, Hartlepool, Wrexham and many other league stalwarts who haven't/ can't find a way back in.

    Drastic times call for bold and drastic measures, and that means having "the car park chat" with Stuart and encouraging him to do the right thing for his beloved club. I'm 100% sure if Mark Lawn were still here he would be having it.

    Diplomatic response!
    Interesting that you think Ryan Sparks will come of age but don't publicly back SM. Also damning that we may have to rely on others going into admin or folding to stay up.
    I reckon SM will walk if needed to give someone else at least a chance of keeping us up, if not extending his contract looks like a shaky start for Mr Sparks or a poor parting shot from Mr Rhodes. Hopefully, RS & SM prove the doubters wrong.

    I'd suggest the latter, whether it's poor or not only time will tell as you say.

    Of all the clubs who have come seriously close to relegation from the Football League, the most successful since their close shave has probably been Burnley.

    Back in the 1986/87 season Burnley went into the final Saturday of the season bottom of the 4th Division, with the league table looking like this:
    [IMG]
    On the final Saturday:
    Lincoln's match finished first with them losing 0-2 at Swansea to stay on 48 points.
    Next to finish, Torquay were 2-0 down at half time but came back to draw 2-2 with an injury time equaliser, moving them onto 48 points, but above Lincoln on goal difference.
    Burnley's match was running 15 minutes late, due to crowd congestion, but they managed to hang on to a 2-1 lead against play off chasing Orient, to move onto 49 points and above both Lincoln and Torquay.

    And so, Lincoln City were relegated, but they would win promotion back to the Football League the following season. Of course, they have suffered a second non-league spell since as well, enduring a 6 season spell on the second occasion.

    Torquay United survived that season, but were to suffer relegation from the Football League in both 2007 and 2014. They have yet to return to the Football League and have even had one season in the National League South before returning to the National League.

    Burnley certainly made the most of that narrow escape, winning promotion from the 4th Division in 1992, another promotion in 1994, a relegation in 1995, another promotion in 2000 and finally promotion to the Premier League in 2009. Their first spell in the Premier League only lasted one season, but they returned there in 2014, again for only one season, before returning for a third spell in 2016.

    Let's hope we survive this season, preferably without the nervous finale endured by Burnley. However, of all the club's that have struggled at the bottom of League Two, Burnley are the club we should be looking to emulate.

    I don’t think this club would survive relegation. And I hope that everyone at the club - whatever is said publicly - fully understands the position we’re now in and the existential threat we’re facing. And I hope Mr Rupp is being briefed transparently to that effect too - because he wasn’t, when this shambles began.

    Fair play. Although one might infer that your response is an answer in itself......

    I’ve been pondering the contract extension for McCall. I think the rationale is broadly; I can’t imagine McCall is on a huge salary, and whilst I may be wrong, if it were determined that McCall had to leave for the good of the club then I don’t think he’d dig his heels in with regard to compensation. So the financial liability to the club is probably lessened in comparison to the same scenario with another manager. I think the move is intended to create at least a degree of ‘certainty’ or at least clarity,regarding the manager position, in support of transfer target discussions for January.

    I'm surprised that Swansea isn't in your analysis of narrow escapes - bottom of the EFL pyramid going into their final game in 2002/03 to beat Exeter who were relegated to the Conference instead. They were promoted to the PL 8 years later via the play-offs. All of that was under the tenure of a guy called Huw Jenkins who was chairman, majority shareholder and CEO during that period. I'll look forward to us doing that!

    You are right, Swansea is another excellent example, although I believe it was Hull City that they beat in their final game of the season.

    It is also worth noting some of the clubs who made up the bottom division that season:
    • Rushden & Diamonds - Champions
    • Hartlepool United - Runners Up
    • Wrexham - also promoted in 3rd
    • Bury - 7th, lost in play off semi-finals
    • Torquay United 9th
    • York City 10th
    • Kidderminster Harriers 11th
    • Darlington 14th
    • Boston United 15th
    • Macclesfield Town 16th
    10 clubs who all finished comfortably above City's current position and who all now ply their trade in non-league football.

    When the White Star Line was informed that the Titanic was in trouble, White Star Line Vice President 'Fordy' Franklin announced "We place absolute confidence in the Titanic. We believe the boat is unsinkable".

    tranmere were also in the mix. They played Exeter the night before and won to move off the bottom. I was at tranmere that night with a rovers fan who tool a minibus of us from work for moral support. It was some night in the mersey clipper afterwards

    What I will say if we have more than the odd player coming in on 31 January ? That will be too late !

    We need all our targets lined up for the first week of January and in the door ready to go. No less than 4 quality players who are starters not bench warmers. Straight down the spine of the team.

    Why do people just assume we’d be wound up or would die if we went down?

    Why would Rupp want that to happen?

    He must be in the top 4-5 owners in league 2 in terms of wealth. Yes he’d be propping it up, but I thought he was doing that anyway?

    Genuine question.

    Walsall 2 points from 18 and looked bloody awful. Penalty debatable but I think it was more a totting up system
