Hughes said time and again last season on his importance of having a big squad.

No manager asks for a leaner squad it is always budget driven.

Also with owner we have its not likely he's suddenly increasing our budget for a smaller squad. I.could be wrong.

 

The big squad was useless last season because there were so many players Hughes didn’t trust or didn’t play

 

The budget will be a competitive one but with a smaller Squad money won’t be wasted on footballers who never play

 

Lets be honest, if Hughes was offered Wright and Banks or an option of Costelleo, Nevers, Dion, Harratt for next season we know he would take the 2 over the 4.

So numbers dont come into it if quality is there.

 

Dion & Costelloe looked great on paper. Is that the risks of the loan market? You never quite know what you are getting with young players.

 

We've got numerous plates spinning, we've watched hundreds of players in the last six to 12 months and we have various targets. Certain ones have become very successful or haven't this season and that changes your plan.
I wonder if this quote from Sparks means the likes of Agyei have become to successful and attracted interest from higher

 

A number of L2 clubs chasing the signature of Abraham Odoh according to PeterO. Rochdale winger, 22 years old, started 32 L2 games for Rochdale, playing in a number of positions. Seems most comfortable as a right footed left winger, but started 13 games on the left, 11 games on the right, 6 up front, 1 start at LWB and one at RWB. Only managed 1 goal and 2 assists. I seem to remember at their place, Lewis pulled off a wonder save to keep an effort of his out?

Who knows if we are one of them, but if we do want a smaller and more flexible squad, player like this lad might be ones to keep on eye on if they can play multiple positions.

Used to be the main lower leagues transfer guy for Sky for about a decade until a year or two back, left to be more freelance. Was working for the Athletic too. Really good track record for EFL news, usually doesn't post club names to a rumour unless he's concrete on their link. As with his Odoh story, its just "various L2 clubs".

 

Hughes can say what he wants in the media but having a squad of 30 and only using the same 18 or 19 all season makes it a waste of resources however you want to dress it up.

 

I'd rather we invest in quality players that are very good at what they do in specific positions rather than going for Jack of all trades, master of none players. Yes it can be useful to have utility players in your squad that can play in a number of positions if needed, but they are very rarely if ever the type of players that get you promoted - See Sutton and Gilliead as recent examples.

 

With Smaller Squads though utility players are necessary

 

Yes agreed, Walker and Gilly might just be the ones providing that potential flexibility, even if we do recruit better for the coming season, good squad back up.?

 

Why do we never put someone wide of the oppo penalty box in case of overhit corners? Does my nut in, the number of corners that sail over everyone when a man posted on the opposite side could get it and launch it back in. It would also require the defence to take a man out of the box to mark him, leaving the box less congested, so more chance of a shot going in.
