If we get wright that’s the missing link. He is good all around the park.

Wright has had some minutes for Plymouth thus summer so far, but looks way down the pecking order up top, especially after signing Whittaker yesterday. Looks like he is might a back up wing back option.

He wasn't included in the 21 man Plymouth squad for their friendly last night.

Said it for weeks this window smells of cost cutting. We pushed it last year and failed and now it’s back to making do. When it goes tits up next year we will push the boat out that summer. It’s a cycle… I just don’t get where the record turnover has gone or going.

If we “pushed it” last year and we still have the same players plus players like Pattison Smith and MvDonald and a probable big wage rise for Cook how are we cost cutting?

    Interesting

At this stage of his career, I don't think he will want to be back-up to anyone, championship team or not

I honestly think we will see him back at City within 2 weeks

Exactly. If anything, the wage bill will be higher

Be very happy with that. Still would need a wide right player though

Eisa, Threlkad, Songo and Clayton I would imagine would have been on good money - collectively and individually. I reckon that’s covered the new names you highlighted.

The extra last year would have been on Dion, Wright, Costello, Nevers where I imagine we would have been paying a decent percentage on their wages.

I’ll wager once the season is over the wage bill will be higher than last year. A leaner but more expensive Squad

Suppose no way of proving it either way, but what I will say is you tend to have to pay for the better players whether that be transfers or high wages. Those factors dictate the quality and I don’t think we have this year in my opinion enough and that will be reflected in where we finish which in my opinion will be lower than last year.

Given a choice between Banks or Wright, I'd take Wright all day long and twice on a Sunday.

I think you are confused - it isn't cost cutting. Its about spending the budget better.

All the players you mentioned were shite, and a waste of money apart from Wright and arguably Clayton.

So why are you complaining about using our budget better? Makes no sense whatsoever.

That's fair enough, it is your opinion after all and we should respect that, even if a few of us don't agree with it. I am in that latter camp though.

I am firmly of the opinion that we are on course for a leaner, meaner squad. IE fewer players but of better quality at a greater cost. Players like McDonald, an in demand Pattison and a decent - if not yet proven - looking prospect from the Championship in Smith. Each one of those will have come at a premium for this level and have replaced the likes of Songo, Clayton and Eisa. I would argue man for man, we have improved in quality in these areas.

When you understand their likely roles in the team, it becomes apparent that areas of deficiency last season appear to have been addressed. With the likes of McDonald and Pattison, the middle of the park all of a sudden looks far more dynamic and carries a greater attacking threat. Smith will add pace at the top end of the pitch to stretch defences. These were all areas we struggled to address last season.

There is more work to be done and if rumours of Wright's return are to be true, then that would really boost the team. I think developments in the loan market will be interesting to watch as we seek to bolster our options.

All of the above, is of course in the context of being implemented into an established team who have proven they are collectively top end of League 2. Yes, the competition is looking tougher, but so are we.

I’m still a bit concerned by the apparent lack of pace at the back.

A season long loan for Wright with no January returns and an agreement to buy if we go up would be a great signing. Truly hope you didn't just make that up @SteveC@SteveC

I do think we are using the budget correctly- I don’t think for one second Rides and Gilly were worth new deals. I don’t think we are getting value out of Oliver, Hendire and Odisina.

Respect your opinion of course, however in a league that was very very poor last year I didn’t see us put in one whole 90mins performance bar Gillingham away. We dropped c.9 points in last minute goals and created very little outside of Cook. Too many of those part of that are still here.. yes the counter argument is we made the POs. However when it mattered we fluffed it oh and At Northampton at home and Crewe away when we could have broken into the top 3.

I don’t think what we have added is going to bridge the gap to the top 3 or make us go further in the play offs. We needed more quality and all this leaner and meaner mantra is fine if we had adequate quality prior in my opinion we don’t.

Don’t get this obsession some of our fans have about pace at the back it’s far better to read the game than rely on pace

It’s based entirely on Stubbs getting skinned by Agyei at Crewe.
I’m struggling to remember any other goals we conceded that were solely down to a lack of pace.
(There probably are a few but not to the extent some are making out)

    One game, one goal?
Can’t think of another primarily because we don’t play on the half way line and allow balls over the top?
