If wager that lot were around £8k before adding Cook in, Cook would take it to £10k plus.

    As was Peter Thorne.

You can have a couple of aged, senior pro's. I think the 2 key points are

    1. The character and motivation of the player.
    2. Whether the player has ever relied on pace.

I'd stay away from players who's primary asset has been pace. They tend to drop much more markedly in their twlighlight years.

Well I was been generous because I don't know the actual salaries. Fact is I would take a £4k Mullin and Charlie Wood over Lavery, Robinson, Elliot and Delfuneso.

Angol will be there as well. Plus you would think at least one more with a half decent pedigree like Andy Cook.

Fairly certain when Sparks went on the Posh chairmans podcast towards the end of the summer window, he said something along the lines of... the summer signings all fit under the new model of sustainability, we weren't going to have vast scales of pay anymore and everyone brought in was on about 1.5K a week. I remember him saying 1.5K a week was either the average or the aim for new players and everyone was on about if they were brought in last season. Cant remember 100% without going back and listening.

But to be fair, all 24 teams in this league would take a Mullin on 4K a week if he guarantees goals. Just who is willing to gamble.

Well I can kind of understand that after we got our fingers burnt with James Vaughan, his pay off was substantial. But the reality is we are going nowhere fast trying to do things 'sustainably'. We need to speculate to accumulate.

I think it was McCall who referenced £1.5k a week when he discussed the summer recruitment of 2020.
That took us to the bottom of the league.

Not sure if Salford have no strategy. I think this has been discussed at length before, but they are Planning to move to the Salford Rugby stadium. https://salfordcityfc.co.uk/aj-bell-stadium-update-190322/ Opposite side of Salford, miles from the current ground, notoriously difficult to get there. About a 40 minute walk from the nearest station/tram (so a ‘green’ solution). It has a 12,000 seater capacity, yet Salford have the lowest average attendance in League Two 2,152! Lower than Altrincham!
    So some strategy there.

I recall that discussion. The £1500 per week quoted by Sparks was the average wage which could be paid under the then new salary cap of £1.5m for a squad limit of 20 players. It didn't of course stop individual players being paid more than that so long as some received less.

Fortunately the salary cap and squad limit were short lived due to PFA pressure and the EFL reverted to the previous SCMP regime. That's what clubs are now working to. For us given our revenues, that means a salary cap for the squad of about £3m. Whether we choose to spend that much is a matter for Rupp and Sparks to resolve. I suspect we won't from what Sparks has already said.

Surely the logic is to spend just about all your budget, if that is calibrated to be sustainable?

We don’t get into debt, we bring in the best players on a salary within the £3m limit.

If the club does get promoted, the actual business will be worth more, yet the expenditure will not have exceeded the income.

Yes, you'd think so but that view doesn't seem to be shared by Rupp and Sparks. SCMP was in use for the 21/22 season and according to the club, our playing budget was way short of the SCMP limit. We could have had a much bigger playing budget and stayed within the SCMP limit but we chose not to.

When their losses were reported in April, Neville confirmed the clubs in talks to start using the man united training complex at Carrington. Move to a big stadium and training at Carrington shows they are aiming towards some form of strategy, but yeah, just a weird thing in terms of fans. Wonder if they hope a few might want to come to somewhere nicer than the Peninsula? But the new place isn't exactly anywhere for locals to pop to. As you say, no transport links and that Trafford Centre traffic round there on a weekend is a joke on a normal saturday, nevermind when you add match traffic too.

That is absolutely what we should be doing, in fact we probably are, even moreso following the pandemic. The only time we may see the budget stretched is Jan for a final push if we are there or thereabouts. The danger is go over budget and don’t get promoted. That’s were debt and a wealthy owner willing to spend comes in?

Oh you mean the strategy that was to sack a manager who had them in the playoffs which Neville later admitted to being a an error on his part. As for off the field strategy discussed on here if you look back you'll find I was part of that discussion. I'll put no 'on field' strategy next for the pedants.

Salford rugby league club have been the longest standing tenants at the club and have suffered with the location of what was a new stadium at the time due to its location. Their old ground the willows was right in the heart of Salford, I watched rugby there many a time. Something clubs need to think about when talk of relocating.

Bang on. One not too far from me…Colchester’s “drive or two day hike to” stadium .
In the middle of industrial estates, “ but it’s close to at A12” if arriving by car.

It's a deal that works well for both the football club and rugby club. The Red Devils get a smaller stadium that costs less to maintain and Salford City get a bigger stadium that would be ready for the Championship if/when they get there. They can also offer more tickets to away fans which will bring them in more money.

It's the old American model. Drive everywhere. If they put on free buses from the centre that would be more than handy but many clubs don't really think
