I watch a fair amount of Championship football and Carroll looked an absolute donkey at WBA(although it was under Bruce’s god awful dinosaur tactics), I wouldn’t say it was the biggest shock or big signing though if it happened and has been bigged up to be. Smallwood is a far better coup.

Donaldson looked better at Sheffield United in the championship before coming to us and hardly ripped the league up. As for Diouf meh.

 

Its a marquee signing for this level. Played in the PL majority of his career and England caps. Smallwood will be a better signing but this would be far far bigger.

L2 is a huge drop in class. Surely he has enough left in the tank.

 

Not for me SP……I thought he had bad knees etc etc? Hey due diligence and all that.?

 

Carroll would be an absolute unit in L2, his game has never relied on pace.

 

Brugges wanted to sign him for their CL campaign, but he failed a medical.

 

If you could keep him fit it's a ridiculous player at this level.

 

It would be all over the papers after his 'interesting' summer. Good publicity for the club.

 

Injuries a worry but he managed 23 games from mid October to May last season. Think he was without a club before Reading aigned him in October.

 

Some big money moves during his career as you say not short of a bob or two, maybe his time out injured may help him continue playing as with Peter Beagrie and Peter Thorne ?.

He's played over 350 games in his career despite the injuries.

 

Injuries have taken their toll on him badly, he was a complete cart horse in the championship. Players like Josh Wright, Hope Akpan and Clayton Donaldson dropped down and were crap. I’m not doubting his past but he’s just a name, if we got another striker with similar stats in the championship we’d question that their legs had gone I have no doubt. He looked nothing like the Andy Carroll of the premier league last season. All you have to do is look at the likes of Bale to see how badly footballers can regress when they don’t play much, I’ll support him if he comes but after it was bigged up I couldn’t be more underwhelmed. I’d rather of heard we were setting up an Under 23’s for the kids to get a better pathway into the first team, I’d have found something like that much more big and exciting but that’s just my opinion.

 

If we got 50-60 games between him and Angol, you'd have to think we'd be bang up there.

 

Carroll was and is a class above the dross you just mentioned!

 

If it turns out to be a wind up I'll kick the lad's arse who text me's, he used to be close to James Mason but with him not being around I think he might have another source, I asked if it was James and he replied "No mate. Better than him"

 

He was but you mentioned the drop in class and I’m giving them examples to show just because players drop a division or two doesn’t mean they’ll rip it up when their legs have gone. Clayton Donaldson was far from dross as well, we’d have killed for him in his pomp.

 

Not disagreeing with your post but even if we doubled his reputed wage at WBA, £2k a week and a goal bonus maybe a 12 month contract with an option, I'd think that is a gamble worth taking.

 

Tbf I don’t disagree there, if he’s cheap it’s worth a look. Not sure I’d be doubling his wages though he’s not achieved enough in the last few years to get a pay increase anywhere, plus he’s an injury risk, 2k is decent money to a league 2 club, well above the average can’t afford to have high injury risks on the bigger wages. We’ve been there and got the T shirt.
