Totally get that mate, but those few years were the best being a city fan for me.

I'd had years of supporting a shit team going nowhere and could only dream of playing some of those teams in the FA Cup.

I'd take the very highs and the very lows over being shit but stable any day.

Nice overview. However one serious query, why cant we compete with Burton?

Also an established side. We've gone backwards since then.

How so? We were league one., we are still league one. We have stagnated and have done for 5 years.

I'll not bother putting the final league tables up for the last 2 years.

I don't know how you define 'smallest' but the last time Millwall declared their wages bill when in the Championship was two years previously. And then it was £15mill. That isn't to say that they spent as much as that last season or it could have been more. But it indicates the gulf between us and at the time a lower level Championship club.

Still in the same league fella. League positions mean very little on the grand scheme of things - always back to where we started.

I don't know the whole story at Burton and imo they have defied the odds. But maybe having access to the best football training facilities in England is part of the story?

It was £9.4m in 2017. One of the smaller ones I would guess.

Yes, we have a long way to go but income would be up in the Championship. Its not all doom and gloom.

It was reputed to be approaching that level in season 16/17 when they were promoted. Are you quoting 16/17 or 17/18?

I've just checked Millwall's 16/17 accounts (when they were in Div 1) and their wages bill that season was £9.4mill. I doubt very much that it didn't increase when they were in the Championship.

Stability means staying where you are, like Oldham did for 15 odd years. I'd rather get relegated and at least have a chance of winning something. Imagine 15 years stuck in the same division.

Can’t argue with that but there is little evidence it’s sustainable. Although I do believe they are now backed by a wealthy Trumpite so one never knows

I agree, i don't think they will be one of the divisions big spenders but lets not kid ourselves that they got to where they are on a shoestring budget. 9 seasons out of 14 in the championship will command a wage budget to suit.

To put that in context, what was our wage bill for the same season?

That's the fundamental point. Let's assume that we do get into the Championship in the near future. We will then need a huge overhaul in our finances (and probably our playing staff) in order to become established there. The last time the financials for the entirety of the Championship were analysed, a middle order Championship wages bill was around £18-20mill from memory! I've previously posted a graph of that on here but can't find it at the mo. That puts what we currently do into perspective. And the reason for that is for one of two reasons. A handful of clubs are in receipt of parachute payment from their time in the PL. But the second reason and the more widespread is that just about every owner of a Championship club subsidise their club's losses (caused by the level of wages in the Championship) in one way or another, usually by either injecting equity into the club or providing low interest loans.

Whether we like it or not, that's what we'll be up against if when we are promoted with the current mindset.
