A few weeks training with McElhone might kill the poor bugger

I saw flashes of brilliance and nous ........... Just nowhere near enough for our level, and where we want and need to be. I hope the recent coaching setup can work on his strengths, and limit his weaknesses (injuries).

I felt that a lot of the time our forwards weren't really playing on the same wavelength as Scannel. He seemed to have no problem getting to the line, and then drilling in low crosses which, bearing in mind our forwards hadn't won a header all season, in my opinion was the right thing to do. Unfortunately neither Doyle nor Miller at that time made the near post runs to get on the end.

Quite right ........... and why I don't want to criticise him too heavily. The whole team seemed at odds with each other at that (awfully long) time.

I think one of our problems was that we were playing it too much through Scannell.
As someone said we were not getting any goals from his crosses and he very rarely played the ball inside to Payne. He seemed a one trick pony, in that he ran down the wing and tried to get the ball in. As soon as he got his red and got an injury we were forced to play more centrally and that invited Payne more into the games.

His ability is way above this level. Just a pity he is made of glass

I saw a player who was decent on the ball, but don't remember any brilliant shots, crosses, skills, or beating of defenders...

Can you recall what brilliance you saw? This is out of interest, I'm not saying you're wrong, I just wondered if you could jog my memory.

Did he have any goals or get any assists?

Genuinely cannot remember him having any sort of impact, but I'm still expecting far more when he comes back firing for a team with much, much more motivation, belief and tactical nous.

With the attacking players turning up week in, week out, the onus and pressure shouldn’t be on Scannell to deliver. He can now play with a bit more freedom and relax a bit more.

    Agreed.

I just wondered about the validity of those moments of brilliance, that's all.

The only time I saw a 6/10 performance was the Sunderland game, up until he was sent off.
I’m yet to see the player Jamie Lawrence described, when he signed.

You are not living up to your user name then. Are you saying every other game he was 5 out of 10 or below which implies a bad game? Or are your scoring based on expectation and value for money?

5 out of 10 isn't bad considering performances were abysmal.

I think (and believe this to be happening) that all the players are being given fresh chance to prove themselves.. This starts in training

I agree Inspector but even most of the shower at that time were a 3-4- 5 or 6 at most.

Be interesting to see his mindset when he returns. I'd heard (I know, I know) that such was the shambles of how we were operating in 2018, that he deeply regretted joining the club in the early part of the season and wanted away in January.

Hopefully that's changed, and our professional attitude to training and playing will bring him around. If he's properly fit and bought into what we're doing, he could be a great addition once back. He could play in a number of positions - in the space where Ball/Payne have played, just behind the strikers. He could play on the right of a midfield 3, where Mellor has played, or as an out and out winger. He could also play at wing back if needed (if Caddis is ever out).

He'll be one of our biggest earners - we need him to produce.

Based on the level of expectation when he signed, I was hoping for more “better than average” performances than we’ve seen. Maybe he’s a confidence player like most wingers seem to be, I don’t know.

From what I’ve seen he never grabbed the game by balls and ran at the opponents, unlike his mentor Jamie Lawerence.

Hopefully Hopkin can have a similar effect on him, as McCall did with Marshall. If so he'd definitely be like a new signing.

The Puppies loved him as a player although he gets injured a fair bit.
