Cheers Rod. Been to Angels with Bagpipes before, and also Fishers in the City. Both were very good. I did originally book Fishers in Leith but tbh it looked a bit old fashioned so swapped to Ondine. I'll let you know how we get on. Thanks for the advice

Went to the Dakota Grill within, unsurprisingly, the Dakota Deluxe hotel in Leeds on Friday.

It's Simon 'L'Enclume' Rogan's son heading up the kitchen and although none of this stuff is as distinctive as his dad's cooking, it was on the whole top stuff.

Here's the cod & chorizo. There was also chicken & black truffle. Had dessert cos someone else was paying.

I can't see any chorizo there. Had you eaten it before you took the pic?

Went to The Kashmir last night. Good stuff, particularly at 7 quid a pop.

On recommendation from here going to the Waterside tomorrow. Is there a decent pub to take the wife's posh southern mates to. I think Fannys is still closed? The fox maybe?

Fanny's has changed hands. I'm pretty sure it's open now.
    The Fox is nearer.

Enjoy your meal at the Waterside. We were there last Saturday and it was as good as ever.
Booked again for September when we are down for the Barrow match.

I'm looking forward to it. Does it have a decent bar area for drinks beforehand. Weather is looking shocking?

There is a small bar area inside the restaurant and a marquee on the terrace next to the canal.

We had our first visit to the Waterside last night. It was very good but maybe just not quite there yet, although that could be because we are just emerging from what has been a horrendous time for hospitality. First impression wasn't great as we came down the steps, the roof of the temporary marquee was very dirty, but like I say maybe a throwback to the bad times.
We arrived at quarter to seven for a seven thirty booking to give us time to catch up with friends. The bar area was a bit untidy with one table covered with paperwork. Even though we had said we wanted to have a couple of drinks in the bar, they came four times to take us through to our table and we had to send them away. There you go that's all the bad stuff out of the way! The ambience in the restaurant was much much better and all the staff we met were excellent. Our waitress was friendly and knowledgeable about everything on the menu. I think the size and quality of the menu and wine list was perfectly judged for a restaurant of this size. just 18 covers. The food was very good indeed and catered very well for our one pescatarian (it's some sort of Southern thing I think). The cheese board was amazing and the best I have ever experienced. The owner came to chat and told us a bit of their short history. He is very dry and funny. All in all a very good night, finished off at the Fox. I have no doubt we will be going back very soon, either as a couple or with friends. Not cheap but well worth it. If they just tidy up those couple of little things I wouldn't be able to fault it at all.

I was in town last weekend for a flying visit and wanted a 'proper' curry. Sister wanted an Aagrah buffet which I was ok with but when we found out it's not open until teatime the floor was open. I'd read about Sultans on this thread so thought we'd give it a go. One sentence review; it's how a Bradford curry used to be.

I'll attach the menu and you'll see that it's not extensive. In fact there are no veggie starters at all. Not even onion bhajis or poppadoms which is surely a staple. A few whispers of discontent amongst the ranks established at the table. I got a sheek kebab. Still sizzling when it arrived which is always a good sign. Delicious. I was the only greedy get having a starter anyway.

Mains. The 2 veggies at the table didn't have much choice and went for a aloo mutter and an aloo gobi to share half each. The southerner went for a biryani and looked worried. He'd had a bite of my kebab that almost blew his head off. I went for a meat karahi. Ordered rice and a naan with it then we get the good news. 'It comes with 3 chapattis anyway mate.' Jaw hit the floor. You forget that when you're exiled from Bradford.

With no poppadoms to munch on as we waited the 10 minutes for the food we had to chat. Couldn't even look down my nose at a double dipper. There's always one. Entertained by the chef literally shouting to people stuff like 'THERE'S EGG IN THE BIRYANI MATE, IS THAT ALRIGHT?' Southerner replies, ' Yeah vats awight mate' in that southern way.

The curry was sensational. Really really bloody good. I asked for medium spice as I've been out of Bradford for a while and all soft now and it was just delicious. Meat so tender, consistency just right, chapattis so good. The veggies were attacking the leftover sauce in the bowl with the last remnants of any bread they could find. Southerner even finished his biryani with the help of a lot of yoghurt sauce. Pennies under £45 for 4 of us.

    Didn't do desert.

Decor is old school, high topped bench style seats in booths. Nothing fancy about this place. It's cash only so have that in mind. Cash machine at Tesco Express.

Will I come again? Every time I'm in Bradford. In fact I went in the next day to get the exact same meal as a takeaway to have when I got home after a long drive. Didn't get to eat it which is another story we won't go into but I'm still upset and angry days later.

    Go, it's great.

Excellent stuff. Has this place in the same institution category as the city's other old-timers? I never heard it mentioned in my youth, unlike the Sweet Centre, Kashmir et al.

"It comes with chapattis" is a line I'm hearing less if, too. And - get this - Mumtaz were charging for water, too.

I dunno why top brass at the council don't use our second-to-none curry scene to promote the city more. People love it, and rightly so.

I don't think it's been around as long as those places, I think it's relatively new. Polish cafe a couple of doors down decorated like your Nan's house. Fancied a bit of that but it was closed.

I love Sultan's curry house. Beats any other for me in Bradford. I believe they're opening up a new site down the road near My Thai.

Ondine Edinburgh update.....first impressions weren't great....However the restaurant had made a great effort with frosted films on the windows to hide the "view". Food, wine, service and atmosphere were all excellent. The place had a real buzz and nowhere near as "up itself" as I was expecting. Maybe we hit on a good night. Not cheap but worth it and wouldn't hesitate to return 20210811_112336.jpg

A very late reply but we ended up going my meal (chicken Bhuna) was fine however my other half’s meal was a tikka masala and it was extremely spicy when she asked for it to be as mild as possible and was very watery. Disappointing.

Had tea at Sheesh Mahal earlier. Kept it simple - two curries + breads.

My bhuna was very mild, entry-level heat, but nicely done. The madras had a bit of tongue-numbing fire - cloves maybe? - and is one to go back to. Excellent.

I rate the chapattis and naan here. Fluffy but substantial. Circa £8.50 per dish, includuing these bready extras.

General, niggly (and minor) point not just directed at this place: bit weird to stick a pickle tray on the table, unrequested, and then whack it on the bill.

    But anyway.
