If a cartoon emoji is getting a grown adult upset enough to start bickering then it isn't the cartoon emoji that's the problem.

We're not allowed ratings. They upset some of the grown men on here.

You'd probably have to get rid of the Countdown Thread, then. LOL!

Hats off is @Hoochy-Min@Hoochy-Min's thread. Only the fun hoovers found it offensive.

Ratings killed C&B at times, the ‘like’ only aspect on here is infinitely better as it promotes debate should someone disagree as they have to say why and in turn avoids the childish and unbelievably petty crap that plagued the old site. Please don’t try turn this place into C&B part 2 when it’s a very very good board as it is. *Totally pointless ‘Cheers’ emoji*

Someone who gets offended by a little cartoon picture of a cowboy hat and labels it akin to "bullying" should not really be suggesting to others that they need to grow up.

The poop emoji was the best thing the old forum had. Loved giving it out for the shits and giggles it got.

Only because we have grown men without the mental capacity to process a negative cartoon emoji.

I'm not all that bothered about some of them but the "funny", "agree", "disagree" etc imo genuinely helped threads flow as they didn't get bogged down as much with several posters typing exactly the same point over and over again simply because the function isn't available.

This is a really good forum and it is working well, Why try to fix something that is not broken?

BTW most of the drivel and hate posts and the deterioration of the use and quality of posts and poster on the old site was because of the dislike and poop buttons etc, LEAVE WELL ALONE

Sometimes the problem with emojis was you could only give one. This for example needs a winner, funny, agree, like and a thumbs up.

I cant speak for others, but personally speaking:

*Sometimes, I'm simply not in the mood for a debate. I don't want to go back and forth and I really can't be arsed typing up anything insightful. On an opinion based platform, a rating system would still allow me to express myself when I otherwise wouldn't have done so.

*There's an awful lot of tripe posted on here. As things stand, I don't have a lot of choice but to read this tripe, which can often result in a poor forum experience. sometimes I might want to challenge such posts but on other occasions I just want to read interesting well thought out viewpoints. A rating system would indicate which posts may be worth reading and it goes some way towards reducing the amount of drivel I have to shift through.

*They are just interesting. If someone posts something controversial, i want to see the general consensus on it. Perhaps X player is more popular than I thought?

*It's just a good, convenient way of acknowledging a particular post.

The reasons don't matter though. The point is that many feel that they enhance the forum and those that dont aren't forced to use them.

I often used to browse C & B using the ratings as an indicator and whilst it obviously wasnt 100% accurate, it went some way towards reducing the amount of BS i read on days where i simply did not want to read it.

I'd also argue that ratings reflecting a range of different emotions allow greater flexibility than just a 'like' and, imo of course, provide an interesting insight into the consensus of a particular post.

Others also make valid points. Often it's neccessary to 'disagree' with a particular post but it's not always suitable to explain why that's the case post after post, mainly because it's not particulary interesting for others. There have been many tedious, prolonged discussions where a simple 'disagree' button would be better suited.

People do see the value in them, and those that don't are not forced to use them.

See this is to me is the worst reasoning going. It's why Reddit, for example, is such a cesspool as it turns into an echo chamber. You can write a well-informed post using reasoning and evidence but if it doesn't match the 'agenda' everyone agrees with it gets downvoted into oblivion on mass so it drives people who have differing opinions away as it almost ends up being used like mass bullying when people with differing opinions are actually good for any place of discussion. If you disagree with something you have a reason for doing so as such the expectation that you can actually justify your reason isn't that much to ask. Its a million times better and as a poster to have people disagree but provide a reason than sit there in secret clicking dislike. I would go as far as saying that for community building even with reactions they should actually only be positive reaction options rather than having negative ones

On the technical front BTW, I did actually implement this many months back and it broke multiple things. Some of you may remember that as you contacted me about things being broken. I could probably work through some of the conflicts but the biggest issue is at the time we were looking to limit it to certain groups to prevent abuse of the system (and also as a perk for being good members of the community) but when activated it takes over the whole like system. All previous likes are no longer shown and anyone not able to use it lose the ability to like posts completely. As such this idea of allowing an opt out isn't going to work as it means not being eligible to receive or give any likes at all, not just the 'reaction likes'
