The mediocre season we spent in the play-offs (until he was sacked) with an inferior squad to the previous season?
    That mediocre season?

I think the finances of those around us is a bit exaggerated. Otherwise, why are Peterborough still down with us after so many seasons - it's the first time in four seasons they've ended above us and even then only just. So either we're great with money or they are poor

I'm not convinced Scunny can continue to finance their dream either

I do see Pompey as pushing the boat out, probably along with Luton. But even if you add Charlton on and all of the three relegated clubs, that still only eight likely to have more finance, with at least three of them questionable about how much more it will be

For me it comes down to the coaching, more than the finance and managers will come or stay at clubs who have left finance than others, if they believe in the project. And some coaches will believe in our vision

I'd think many would still support the club, but having belief and supporting the owners is a completely different thing, because if they did take us down that would be a massive mistake they have made one way or another.

You raise some good points. If or when we get to the Championship, the playing budgets are colossal compared to where we are now. In the recent past ML & JR have said that they couldn't afford to do a Dean Hoyle and underwrite the club's fortunes. And I have sympathy for that view. So why would two Germans without any prior connection or emotional attachment to our club be willing to do what ML&JR wouldn't do? I've no real answer to that other than to acknowledge that they bought the club as a business venture, ie to make some money from it, and also to go back to something Rupp said when they bought the club which was there would be other investment once we were in the Championship to then reach the PL. And it's the PL where the riches are to be found. But I suspect there are another 20 sets of owners who have the same dream!

A city the size of Bradford together with its surrounding area should be able to sustain a Championship club. Bradford is the largest metropolitan area in England & Wales without a football club in the Championship or higher. But that will mean amongst other things that the cheap ST policy has to go over time and simultaneously we have to consider how to get those 4,000-5000 bums on seats which we've just lost back to VP. And neither of those two will straightforward imo. But maybe Edin has a cunning plan!

I don't want to think about spending our future years in Div 1 and certainly not in the khazi league again but I recognise they are possibilities. I really want the owners to deliver on their original vision and be as successful as possible. I wouldn't begrudge them anything if they even got us into Championship. But I have serious doubts about that happening in the near future without a major change of heart on their part and the introduction of real investment into the club.

There's a strong correlation between the wages a club is willing to pay and success. you're more likely to succeed paying higher wages and the stats are heavily backed in favour of this.

Spot on, you and @Dennis@Dennis have shown the reality of what our owners are going up against financially.

I suspect both owners have a fundamental issue with how much footballers earn. I do too, but that is the nature of the beast. It is going to be hard to achieve success, which I would see as some level of stability in the Championship, without at some point getting past that issue.

Millwall survived comfortably??? THEY JUST MISSED THE PLAY OFFS to go to the premiership by a couple of points, if Derby lost their last game and Millwall won theirs they would have been level on points!

With practically the same team as when they played us, except they have our left back. Makes my blood boil!

It's simply not as bleak as this. You'd think we were competing with 23 Man City's!! What about the one defeat in the last eight - isn't that some kind of turnaround. Did you see Charlton in the play-offs, were they so much better than us?

We're in no worse position now that we were three seasons ago. As like the last three years our gap in ability to the play-off contending teams will not be insurmountable provided we get decent players and a decent coach

Your last sentence sums it up really
Do you really have the confidence that we will get decent players and a decent coach for this season
Our past attempts suggest not. Grayson the self confessed "Championship" manager didnt want the position
and he was at the time out of work. Our attempts to sign a bottom of League 2 striker failed miserably season ticket sales are roughly 5000 down (losing valuable income) And a distinct possibility our star striker will be leaving (did you see our performances when he was suspended last season) that doesnt fill me with confidence that a massive turn round in fortunes is just round the corner
But like you am prepared to be proved wrong and would love to see some light at the end of the tunnel

well looking at the betting market and the names listed, if we discount Rosler and Cotterill, out of whats left we best hope its Warburton - the rest are VERY under whelming.

I think the Cathro rumour has legs. It's certainly different, as Edin eluded to yesterday.

I fear it could be a disaster.

All well and good, Ricc - But the betting list may not duplicate Edins short list. What if Warburton is not even a contender ? Or any on the betting lists, for that matter ? :)

I have actually stopped worrying about the appointment of a manager/coach. It will be whoever they think can work with their plan, it doesn’t matter what ideas they will have, they will be doing whatever they are told.

It doesn’t matter what the fans think either, we are just here to play the part that Edin wants us to play, mainly, cheer the team on, don’t criticise anything the board do. Our club is just a vehicle for whatever they have planned. No talk of promotion, just put out a competitive team?? so the fans buy tickets for next season. In other words do enough to shut them up The main focus of his press release is to promote young players into the spotlight so they will be worth more than what we paid for them.

I really hope I am wrong, and I will wait to see what materialises.

I too think Cathro could be heavily involved in the thinking - he seems to fit what the owners would be looking for and I suspect they'd be impressed with hes credentials with Valencia and Newcastle. I'd be prepared to give him a chance. He had a nightmare at Hearts but the circumstances seemed difficult for whatever reason.

But from the list as it is at the moment, Warburton seems like the best option by some distance and is favourite across a few bookmakers. BetVictor have Robbie Stockdale (Sunderland coach) fairly low in the betting as well - not sure where that's come from.

I'd never heard of Cathro until I did a bit of reading up on the guy.

He ticks just about every box.

I think he'd be marmite but I also think (purely from reading up on him) that if you bought into what he believe's in then I think he would do a very good job. I like the fact that he doesn't go by standard football way of believing the game has to be played and definitely think he could develop and coach players very well.

The only reason I think he may not get the job is because it seems like it's his way or no way - I'm not sure that would work, that may be the stumbling block.

With the guys that he's worked with you would have thought that getting players or recommendations wouldn't be a problem at all. I like the sound of him.

And this is what i keep trying to stress

    Success to us is promotion
Success to the owners is developing players selling on for profit and hanging around 12th in league 1 for next 10 years....

We dont want their version of success!!

You don’t get to choose. They’ve paid the money - it’s their game and their rules.

If these owners had sense they would be offering the job to Pep Lijenders right now.

He ticks their boxes and more.
