I agree with all of that. I was simply responding to a comment from someone that suggested we had spent £300k on the Dev Squad and I couldn’t understand where that figure had come from.

McCall showed last season that with the right nucleus, a good squad can be put together without blowing the budget. However, having a low to middle budget always makes it harder. How many times in the summer and January didnthe club claim to have tried to sign a player only for them to be turned down.

 

Its why the top six in the premiership is way ahead of everyone else, look at the teams at the top of the championship - Wolves, Villa, Fulham, Derby. Teams like Cardiff and Millwall show with the right manager and strategy you can be up there but generally the lower spenders like Burton, Barnsley and Bolton are fighting relegation. Even in our division who in their right mind would have bet against Blackburn and Wigan finishing as the top two? No surprises they have the biggest budgets. It can be done but the general rule of thumb is bigger salary = better quality of player = better chance of progression.

 

I think the 300k includes the cost of the wages of the coaches that have been taken on over the past two years. From memory I think there are now about 6 coaches and then an academy manager, maybe more.

 

I was chatting to a friend at half-time on Tuesday night. His friend is one of the youth coaches at the club and claims that McMahon had a massive bust up, which is why he wasn’t allowed to be selected.

Personally, I don’t believe it, but he claims that Scunny made an offer and McCall advised McMahon of the interest. Expecting the club to agree (with him not having a long contract left and a verbal agreement being given last summer that we wouldn’t stand in his way if interest was shown), McMahon is alleged to have told Rahic exactly what he thought of him. He then supposedly said his goodbyes to the players and told one or two of them a few harsh home truths too. Rahic said he would never play for the club again and could rot in the reserves rather than play or be sold.

However, after the embarrassing defeat against Wimbledon and Rahic giving McCall the ultimatum of winning the next 2 games, McCall apparently told Rahic he had to allow him to pick McMahon. And as we know, we failed to win those games with McMahon and so THAT was allegedly the reason for McCall getting the sack.

As I say, I’m not a believer, but it does goes to show how people associated with the club are happy to start these stories

Two possibly three of the clubs relegated last season are going back to the championship. It’s going to get harder to go up without good investment, because the teams coming down have such an advantage.

 

I was chatting to my friend at the time. I don’t know his friend at all, other than he has mentioned him doing some coaching a few times before.

The lad I was speaking to is genuine and wouldn’t make stuff up. However, he is quite gullible and could quite easily have been taken in by his friend’s claims

 

I personally don't mind Doyle, Dieng or Law and would be happy enough to keep them as 'squad members'. The two German keepers and McMahon can go. Chickson, NKP, Vincelot, Poleon are all under contract but I would listen to offers for all four.

Be interesting to see who our summer targets are. I wonder if we will go back in for Mellor, Riley, Grant, Doyle and Dennis? I would take all 5.

Agreed. He seems to have got his act together under Grayson. Whether that is Grayson telling him he is part of his plans or McMahon simply realising he needs to buck his ideas up to get a decent club in the summer, who know's. But he's certainly finding his form and his swagger again.

Play like he has done in the last couple then you'd sign up him straight away but you worry there's a bit too much water under the bridge.

 

If what has been said is true then he can sling his hook. We can’t risk him jeopardising team moral like he allegedly has done this year. We can’t reward anyone involved, after the shambles that has gone on.

Scunny wanted him. Blackburn wanted him. He wanted to leave. What makes you think he will stay now? If Scunny come in for him again (or another L1 club with ambition and big pockets), he’ll be gone
