The Thames water one cost £250 million and it doesn’t work. It’s never been online. So you drink sea water all you like mate. You obviously need it more than the kippers?

Saudi has more than 30 working desalination plants currently providing about half of the Kingdom's drinking water. They are a different design to the Thames' Beckton plant and use enormous amounts of energy, even more than the Thames design. They'd be ludicrously uneconomic here in the UK. In a country with cheap oil pumped out of the ground and where rainfall is infrequent, they make perfect sense.

We do not need to do that with sea water it’s bloody summer , summers are usually hot and dry !! Go to the water companies to sort the leaks out which are one of the biggest reasons for the water disappearing! It’s pissing it down all next week….back to usual!

Coupled to the fact most water companies have sold a good few reservoirs for profit.

People say that about meters but it would be costing you more if you were on the old rates system. Yes you can save a bit of cash by not watering but it would take some serious effort to spend what similar houses would be paying on the rates. Talking at work today, I pay £40 a month 3 bed with a decent size garden which we water and fill paddling pools up, one colleague had 2 bed and was paying £60 and another 4 bed house paying over £100 both of those were on the rates. We almost cut our bill in half when we had the meter fitted

You mean privately owned companies can do as they want with their assets, another good reason to take it back in house, you have to feel for the share holder a guy from Yorkshire Water quote there have been no dividends for the last 5 years for Yorkshire Water share holders.

"Shareholders in the UK's nine privatised water companies have made more than £6.5bn from dividends and interest in the past five years, according to new research. Bosses of the nine companies were paid £58m in salary, bonuses, pensions and other benefits over the same five-year period, the GMB union found" that obviously doesn't include Yorkshire Water who are owned by Kelda Holdings, which is incorporated in Jersey, you have to wonder why.

No we do not need to transform sea water to normal drinking water because of a two week heatwave ffs.

I'll let you off that it wasn't you who actually said we don't have a water problem because we have the sea. But you called me brainwashed simply for saying we can't realistically use seawater as drinking water.

And the heat wave isn't what is causing the drought, its just made it worse by increasing demand. Reservoirs being below where they should be isn't just something that's happened this summer, they have been down consistently down both in summer and winter because of changing conditions which is making it harder to replenish the supply and increasing demand putting further strain on it. As others have said we are getting less of the long persistent rain that helps replenish the water sources the best and we are also getting less snow which when it melts replenishes the natural water supplies. And we could all do better with using our grey water for things which we currently use water from the main for or collecting rainwater that is basically lost rather than replenishing water supplies which would help lower the demand on the mains
