With driest Summer on record, surpassing 1976, then the impact on water reserves is hitting a critical point.
Yorkshire Water are announcing a hosepipe ban for the 26th August. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-62506182
City (and all other clubs), spray thousands of litres of water both before the game and at half time.
I assume that will now have to end?
I would have thought that the FA and EFL would take a lead and to equalise out the position, advise or indeed instruct clubs about water conservation.
I think it may gall with some fans, if they cannot do things with hosepipes like wash their cars or water some plants, yet a football club pumps a huge amount of water onto a pitch.

Was at Harewood House yesterday, and large sections of the lake are devoid of water, its going to take rainfall of biblical proportions to get things back to how they were in the spring.

Hopefully a wake up call to sports to conserve water better.
Rainwater could and should be stored and used to water the pitch, flush the toilets in the stands etc
As a nation we're not great at conserving a natural resource - mainly because we usually get so much of it.
But as global warming becomes more of a reality with each passing day, the need to start conserving water will become a necessity.

I think we can all agree that a smooth and proper playing field is more important than a few bodies of water.

The rivers and lakes can wait til the Autumn rainfall, Newport County at home can't

I understand the concern but we have this scenario every few years wait till the autumn rains and we will be awash again

Do you know for certain that the water is all coming from the mains and isn't grey water? I know certainly higher up the levels grey water does end up in the pitch watering system

Anyone complaining about that is a complete and utter idiot. You aren't banned from doing these things, you just aren't allowed to waste a massive amount of water because you are a lazy bum. Fill up a bucket or a watering can and you can wash your car and water your flowers in a more responsible way. It just takes a little longer

I don't think the hose pipe bans affect businesses

We had it years ago working on domestic properties building extensions and using a hose pipe to mix cement and swill down

Neighbours giving funny looks and snide comments but we was well within our rights as the ban was only on domestic properties and not businesses

I presume the same applies to city

To be honest I don’t know the answer.

If it is ‘grey water’, then I think that the club could undertake a little Public Relations exercise and put out some information to reassure the supporters?

The club tweets, sends e-mails and puts information on its website. So not really a huge or costly exercise to put something out?

Silence suggests that it is coming from the mains.

How does a club actually access ‘grey water”. I assume that there would have to be either some form of parallel pipe work or large storage tanks at the stadium?

Perhaps @wetherbywhaler@wetherbywhaler can help, or notify the club, that this is a ‘moral’ issue.

Yes, the ban mostly affects domestic properties.

I thought sports facilities were totally exempt Rod?. My lawn died in 14 days and is now after another 14 days…patches of soil are all over ( East Anglia) . They surely would kill off the season for most clubs without watering natural grasses? Neighbours at two sides of me are using sprinklers. I refuse to. , ironically they used sprinklers after theirs had gone yellow…and they are still yellow! That’s a waste!

Forest Green Rovers have a large water reclamation tank at their ground.

Underground tanks…a giant version of my water buts. Just look at roofing at football grounds that water could be captured from?

Despite my negative feelings towards Forest Green Nowhere, I acknowledge that some of their policies and practices are attractive.

I anticipate that the Metropolis that is Nailsworth (population smaller than Silsden), will have a lot of spare land, which is cheap to buy and relatively easy to develop.

The issue is that hot dry summers, like this one, are going to become more and more the norm rather than the exception.
Hence why both personal and commercial use of water needs to be conserved.
We moan about the rain in this country, but we need to stop taking it for granted that we'll have water whenever and however we want it.

Agree. To simply downgrade the issue to say that it will be sorted out when the autumn rains come round, is too simple a comment.

“It turns out that while Britain seems to have more wet days than many of us would like, it’s the wrong kind of rain: too much, too quickly in winter―and then too little stretched over a long, hot summer’. https://www.nationalgeographic.co.uk/environment-and-conservation/2021/05/the-wrong-kind-of-rain-why-britain-is-not-as-wet-as-we-think

I haven’t washed my car for a month, and wouldn’t take it to a car wash if it was totally free for a year. It needs no explanation .

Drove down Canal road about an hour back and every car dealer was watering the cars on the lots this morning, doesnt look like local businesses in that area are too worried at the minute. Not sure if there is any reserve tanks under VP for the sprinkler system? But having tanks like FGR do seems a sensible way forward for the first weeks of the season.

Never know, we might have something like that in place under the pitch already. If not and the FA made a regulation for grounds to have a water reserve for times like this, would it be a costs to the clubs to install? Or the ground owners if the club dont own their own grounds?

When the club announced the link up with the university the club said that part of the deal would see the uni advise on the shift towards becoming carbon neutral. I wonder if that environmental remit will extend to water use?
