Basically it is not a simple situation, this pandemic is in essence ‘lose lose’. Just going back to the point, if something like 40% of health care workers have dependent children, who is going to look after them, if the schools/nurseries are shut? If they do not go into work, who is going to undertake their medical duties?

Families are going to have to come together with regards childcare responsibilities like they do in any school holiday period. We'd only be looking at the health care staff that are term time only. The rest can clearly cope.

I don't remember a panic in any summer holiday I've ever lived through, and that's six weeks or more in some cases.

We have to remember, most coronavirus patients won't need medical care anyway.

I have a different view. I think we are not going to agree, so will leave it at that.

If you listen to the scientists on this issue. What they are saying is children have a mild version of this virus, and therefore not at high risk. If they have symptoms the whole family need to self isolate for 7 days and keep their distance from their grandparents. That serves two purposes, it not only protects the elderly community, but also provides immunity within the community, the more ppl who have this virus and recover the more immunity builds up.
We are all learning, and not one person has the answer, if you shut the country down, how do you know it won’t all flare up again.

Arsenal expects a "significant number of people" will self-isolate, including the "full first-team squad". https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/51865442

I agree, there is no way now that we will get to the seasons end, whole Arsenal team and some Notts Forest players now in isolation and surely more players throughout the league will succumb to the virus so I reckon there's no point now of risking the large crowds especially for those of us of a certain age, so i'm done now 'til August anyway....

Unfortunatly the way this virus is going finishing this season should be a very low priority for anyone, not having a pop mate.
After reading @Zonnebloem@Zonnebloem post is it worth attending the last few home games, I'd already made my mind up I wouldn't be going to away games after Salford, when I can watch them on TV ?.

It’s spreading. “Three Leicester City first-team players have self-isolated after showing symptoms of coronavirus and "have been kept away from the rest of the squad", manager Brendan Rodgers has said”. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/51856906

Chelsea's full squad has gone into isolation and the club cancelled Friday's scheduled. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/51867854news conference.

Football is over, at least for this season. We will end up like northern Italy, basically on lock down.

What a sad indictment of where the fans rank in the british game. Pack em in, crack on as normal - but 1 player or manager gets infected and its 'game off'

How do you know it's one player and one manager? I don't think the virus sends a calling card ahead of itself. They know (the experts that is) the numbers are far, far higher than is being reported, mainly due to time lags and some not reporting it/silent spreaders.

What do people think footballers are supernatural or something?

So Arteta gets it then call everything off. Shows everything that's wrong with the game.

You can't compare the two countries.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51858987

We're now so lazy as a world that we think that one size fits all, i.e. Ireland's reaction to the school closures is motivated by the fact that their European colleagues have done the same - but Germany and Spain have the thick end of a 100 more cases!!! So again Ireland's 'lemming' like approach is baffling

I think our thinking is far more considered and rational. It won't stop the virus, but it gives us the best chance to prevent it's rapid spread with the minimal amount of disruption

(expect this to get moved as well!! :))

Right. And straight from the article that you linked to:

Even though our epidemic may not follow Italy's exactly, that doesn't mean the UK will escape serious changes to its way of life.

Epidemiologist Adam Kucharski warns against simple comparisons of case numbers and that "without efforts to control the virus we could still see a situation evolve like that in Italy", even if not necessarily in the next four weeks.

The summer holidays are an event that all parents get notice of a year in advance There are millions of parents, who have no-one, close enough, to help. So that means time of work as lots of jobs cannot be carried out from home and of course that means some nurses not working

What could happen is that some parents will club together and agree to look after each others children on a rotational basis, i.e. more groups of children together!!

At school they are contained and have enough sensible professionals around them to keep them as clean as it is possible with 5 to 12 year olds (over that age, they should be able to stay at home by themselves) - of course this is an extra strain on the teachers but all professionals are of course having to take the strain

In fairness there'll never be a right or wrong answer

Well I wont move it, as I think it does have relevance in respect of Saturday’s match.

I watched News Night on BBC2 last night, where they had experts discussing the matter. I think that Programme and the Government Scientific advisor, accept that that virus can no longer be contained and that it’s rate of spread which is now the issue. That the population, through exposure to the virus, which is inevitable, will build an immunity. Tragically that will impact on individuals and their families. This is a ‘moving picture’ there is no perfect answer to it, no ‘magic cure’.
