If we've got the best part of 3m coming in then I'd suggest we get the couple of quality players we need now. We keep some in reserve for a player or 2 in january should we need it, the rest goes back to Rupp to offset what hes put in and protects any further investment he needs to make next summer.

In a transfer, there are two separate contracts. The first between the clubs where any sell on will be detailed and the second between the buying club and player where any financials outlined are just those going to the player. The first contract a copy goes to the two clubs and the second contract a copy goes to the buying club and the player. The player doesn't know for certain what's in the clubs deal just as the selling club doesn't know for certain what's in the contract between the player and the new club.

I wonder if he has got confused and his contract states that he isn't entitled to a sell on if he is sold. It's not uncommon for young South Americas to join a mid-table team in Spain or one of the top Portuguese clubs looking to use it as a stepping stone to the likes of Barca or Real and to take a lower wage to make it happens but to have a personal sell on clause in the deal so that the player themselves get a percentage of any transfer. That could explain how there are two different stories and for both to be correct as it seems strange for a player to comment on a contract clause he hasn't seen let alone be so adamant about it

Yeah, to be honest, there has been nothing about Rupp's backing of the club so far that suggests if we get a million or two windfall that he's going to hoover it up.

Last season Rupp funded a loss, this season he has given us a very strong budget, just one that is hampered by the crap players with crap attitudes that we signed under Rahic - still, it might be enough, and it's certainly a considerable investment.

The idea that Rupp is going to withdraw the entirety of the McBurnie windfall just doesn't seem to check out. By rights he can, and we shouldn't complain if he does, but it seems very unlikely. Rupp set a competitive budget so as not to totally overstretch ourselves, and if a bit more money comes in, it's only going to help get us back where we need to be.

Rupp might not gain anything but losses if he overinvests this season, but he also gains nothing if we don't achieve promotion - I'm sure he's aware of where the value of the club stands from 36 months ago. I'm sure he wants to right that, not just cover losses that, while substantial, are hardly crippling.

Negative fantasists, IMO, inventing stories with zero substance. I've doubted Rupp myself in the past, asked and wondered why he would continue to lose money, but actually the answer is pretty obvious - he needs to invest to make us competitive, and he's hardly going to write off a big loss that can be recovered with sensible management (a loss he can also afford to try and recoup).

The kid who was our top scorer at youth level
The kid who went to play in a tournament for Man Utd and was top scorer
The kid who scored goals at international youth levels for Scotland
Yeah you could tell he was crap and lucky to make it

Usain Bolt is quick and has a build perfect for football. Doesn’t mean he has what it takes to be a top player though. Pace and build are not the only attributes that players need.

Desire, commitment, football intelligence and a natural ability are more so. Some can be coached but most of those traits cannot. You either have a desire or you don’t.

Rhodes and Lawn deserve a big slap on the back for negotiating the 15% clause in the first place. Loads of people happy to chuck mud at them (occasionally with some justification) however this deal / foresight is a massive help to the finances even if Rupp swallows most of it up after dickheads errors last season.

Nope, it's called taking an argument to it's extreme, and it's a test of the argument's viability and credibility.

It was silly for people to comment at the time and say McBurnie couldn't make it because he wasn't ready for first team football.

12 year old Wayne Rooney wasn't ready for first team football. He was when he was 16-17.

18 year old Oli McBurnie wasn't ready for first team football. He was when he was 21-22.

It's incredibly silly to judge teenagers on their ability in the first team when every other indicator (youth team and reserve team football, for example, combined with the expert analysis of staff at multiple top flight clubs) is telling you that there's a very good chance that player will develop into a class act.

So, therefore, saying he didn't score in his first 20 games is stupid at worst, and myopic at best. To retrospectively defend those stupid or myopic arguments NOW is bonkers. Time to accept that the opinion that McBurnie was unlikely to develop into a quality player was nonsense all along.

    Stupid comment Fordy.

Go ask Bolton and Bury fans how their search for a buyer is going.

Our biggest ever transfer windfall effectively gone to pay of the actions of a deranged lunatic playing with other peoples money. The fat bast@rd has gone yet still manages to kick us in the balls with his actions. Makes you feel all warm inside knowing this money is going toward the wages the crap Rahic and Abbott brought to the club last season .

To be fair, that's a pretty standard statement from Rhodes. He'd have found an imaginary gap that needed plugging even if we were in the black.

Getting slated on the Sheffield utd social media. I've no axe to grind here but i think our lottery numbers came in when Wilder chucked £20million at him. There are better strikers in the championship.

One of which is definitely privy to the contract and one isn’t connected to the contract at all.

I know who I would be backing

I’d have no issue with Rupp taking the sell-on for himself, in principle. It’s fair game because he’s underwritten losses last season and this. However, those losses are largely down to his own lack of control and diligence and just a little extra financially to bring in 2-3 more of quality will make all the difference.

One area where it might help - in terms of outgoings against revenue and FFP restrictions we must be sailing pretty close to the limit. A hefty revenue boost now might help raise the limit we can commit to on wages.

I would like to think Oli McBurnie would not have a laugh at our expense. I can only remember us cheering every touch he had, hoping and praying he would score for us. The City faithful really took him in, he didn't score for us but a lot of people still wanted him to get game time. If he had scored I reckon the cheer would of lifted the roof.

    £20M - £500k = £19.5M profit.

    15% of £19.5M = £2.925M

The sensible thing for them to do is probably to recognise they’ve over reached in the short term. Invest modestly to build a top championship side for the following year, which will be further boosted by parachute payments. Then have another go and create a stronger foundation for premiership survival. If they pull off the unexpected, great, and do enough compete without being whipped every week, but keep enough in reserve and buy the sort of players that will stick around so if you go down, it’s not a full rebuild. I suppose Huddersfield followed a similar approach.

I know the money's going back to Rupp but with the squad as it stands, he'd be mad not to spend just a fraction of it on one decent player.

    We're almost there.
