According to the club, the figure is around £300k a season. So if just 1 player breaks through and gets sold on for £1.5m it’s paid for itself for the next 5 seasons.

Where I agree with you is that all available monies should be spent on the 1st team. I personally think the Dev Squad is good, but the owners should pay for it out of their own pocket until it becomes self-funded

They are Premiership players no one else wants.
I can't say I rate Riley or not, he obviously had the ability to be signed by United he has a good back ground playing at various levels for England, but then so did Hiwula and Cole and they still can't get regular starts at the clubs they play for.

Yes, I agree; the club did quote a figure of £300k and that was mainly the extra cost of the development coaches we've employed. What they haven't said is how much on top of that the club is paying for the players in the development squad itself. Even if individually, they are all on lowish salaries, with a squad of 15 or say, it all adds to the cost of running the development squad and thus your example might be a little optimistic.

I agree wholeheartedly with your second point. I would expect the owners to be funding the development squad by injecting additional equity into the club until it becomes self funding. The only alternative using their own self-sustaining model for the club is to take those funds from elsewhere and in particular from the first team playing budget. Without more external funding, we are in danger imo of trying to progress too quickly on too many fronts and without being successful with any of them.

Aye, you're correct, Dave. But sometimes, though not often - you stumble upon a glove that fits. ;)

It’s not puzzling at al Dennis. You’re looking at this very black and white; it isn’t as simple as you’re making out.

Firstly, what’s to say the player doesn’t think he’s progressing quickly enough at said club and wants to move on to accelerate their development? It’s ok being in a top academy, but there’s no better way of improving than playing competitive games and training with the 1st team.

These elite teams and their academies want quick returns. Most lads get snapped up and released again because the clubs haven’t got the patience. If you look at most of them, you will find examples of boys being released, signed by other academies and ‘coming good’.

The skill will be to find these players and persuade them to join us. That isn’t going to be easy, but it doesn’t mean it isn’t possible

I addressed this point at the beginning of last season, Dennis.
Whilst it's a good idea, as it is the model and 'plaything' from the Board - they should fund this away from the first team budget. As I strongly posted at the time ............ City should have two budgets in place. One (a priority) for the first eleven, and the second - For all other business, bank rolled, initially from those who propose such strategies.

The top club's have far too many young players on their books, they hoover up all the talent in the hope they get that 1 or 2 gems. Their isn't enough space in the squad to keep progressing them all so the best get kept and the rest let go.
Just because they are not the best doesn't mean they are not good enough for professional football. These big clubs can't wait for a player to mature they can't keep them all.
That is what we are aiming for, the players that haven't quite made it and need a couple of seasons playing proper men's football to mature and show their true worth.
This will then hopefully make them attractive to other clubs, not necessarily big premier league, we don't need to sell them all for millions even a couple of hundred grand is good business for us.

A lot has been said about signing players from Premiership clubs and some of those who have been loaned out to us.

I remember that in 2011 we signed Oliver Gill and Reece Brown on loan from Manchester United.

Perhaps my view, but the loans were not a great success.

Gill made 4 appearances for us. His wiki entry concludes, “On 18 May, Gill was named as the winner of the Denzil Haroun Reserve Player of the Year award for the year. Nevertheless, Gill left Manchester United in July 2011 to go to university the following September”, he never played professional football again.

Reece Brown is a former EnglandUnder 20 international. He has played 94 professional games, and has had an itinerant career, with lots of loans. He made just four appearances for Rochdale last season and was released.

I guess what I am saying is that being with an elite academy is not a guarantee of success and many either drift out or end up as lower league journeymen.

In fairness to Hiwula, he's got a new contract with Town for this coming season.

Of course he has but it won't be for playing Premier League football, he will be allowed out on loan with which ever club takes him paying a large % of his salary, exactly like last season when we couldnt match what Fleetwood were offeing him.

Fair point on Reece Brown - there will be others. Oliver Gill was the son of David Gill, then CEO so I think he probably stuck around longer than his ability suggested he should have!!!

I remember us signing a number of Everton academy players - all crap from memory. Then again, Darby came from Pool and did well for us.

Warnock, Staunton, Babb all went on to have pretty decent careers.

Very true. Hiwula has had his contract extended by the Dogs so they must see a profit in him, and Cole just needs the right manager. Together they could be awesome as a strike force given the right coaching, a lower league version of Yorke & Cole. Both have as much talent as any striker in this league. They probably just lack prescence

To be fair Michael (can't remember his surname) came from there and went on to have a very solid lower league career and Tom Kearney looked a good prospect - not sure what happened with him. Cadamerteri Everton academy and should have had a monster career had he not been into mars bars and coke.

Come on you know the answer to every single one of these questions. Man City set To go and buy two players this week for shy of 130 million. So that’s two kids further down the pecking order. It’s not that they can’t do it it’s just they have 11 places to pick each week so cannot play everybody in a 38 match season if they want to win things. They have money falling off of them.

Little or no clubs will buy young players for millions when they have paid no first team football. Hence why most get released. The German league is starting to take note of it and signing some very exciting young talent who are going straight into the first teams of Dortmund etc. Jason Sancho being one. Not saying we will pick up talent like that but to dismiss it because the top clubs don’t play them or sell them is rubbish

I agree I think Town are hoping for a good season goal scoring wise and then they should get a return on their investment, whilst the club he's loaned out to pay most of his wages.
