No Niall Heaton the lad who went to Liverpool, McBurnie was part of our youth development as was Clayton Donaldson but he was deemed not good enough at 16 and was taken on by Hull City.

One or two players coming good pays for the failures as I say look what we have brought in without effort

Yeah that heaton I remember now he’s still only young we should sign him back
    He’s in none league now

We should sign a few released academy players. Look at Stephen derby and players like. They can become quite decent after a few seasons in league 1 which is where we could be for some time :)

Look what we have paid out without reward
You seem incapable of comparing the two

Not as much as write offs for players like Anderson,Mclean, and others over the years. What we paid out in fees and wages for those two would have funded the youth policy for years

But we didn’t know that at the time of signing the players you mention. If your method worked nobody would pay transfer fees. And if nobody pays transfers fee then your method deosn’t work.

I think that the development squad fills a gap in another way too. In giving us a through product so to speak it is also a part of community outreach for those players in the locale we can interest. It involves us in every part, or possible part, of a young players career path thereby involving us at every level of football as it pertains to the community a lack of engagement in the community I'm sure I remember some on C&B bemoaning.

Are we sure all this is just to develop these players just to sell on? I'm not convinced that's the entire picture and perhaps Riley is a good example. In the 1st division or the Championship does it not give us the facilities to give young players deemed not quite good enough for Premiership or their particular club's at the moment. We need the facilities as we look upwards to be able to challenge these sorts of players and offer them the structure to match their ambitions.

Nor can I subscribe to what seems the attitude of some that the Development Squad is there purely to treat the members as simply an added value product like some downmarket supermarket, I think many have got hold of the wrong end of the stick there. If they are deemed a valued asset it also means they are a good player and I should think we may get 1~or a few seasons out of some if sadly not all of them.

So for me it fills a gap in our engagement with the community whilst offering a structured and funded career development path attractive to players, and yes if we have any ambition then these things need addressing. Why not now?

    Good post:thumbsup:
I see two of Coventry's goals that helped them win promotion back to league 1 this afternoon were scored by players brought through their academy.

Just been reading the match write up and they had 7 academy players in their team. Not sure you can aim for those numbers even at just a league above but it's certainly impressive.

It is impressive. Coventry say that their academy has been producing first XI players for the past 10 years or so and thus is attractive to parents who want to get their kids into pro football. Coventry's academy is designated Cat 2 (the 2nd highest category) and is the 27th most successful academy in the entirety of the PL and the EFL. To put it into context, Man U's is a Cat 1 and 1st in the list; ours is 69th in the list and is a Cat 3, the lowest level in pro football. There are 86 clubs in the list who run some level of academy. We are therefore in the bottom 20% of successful academies

But we appear to be going down a different route to Coventry. We seem to be focusing our efforts on the development squad route with a new development coaching regime and recruiting older players from outside the club; typically 19-22 years old. Most academies' players are 9-18 and at Cat 2 and Cat 3 level, tend to be recruited locally. As yet I'm not convinced that we have a coherent approach with both a locally recruited academy and an externally recruited development squad. Our thinking on this appears to be a little confused.

It's easier to create a League 2 play-off winning player than a Championship player (which is what we are aiming for).

The higher you go up the ladder, the harder it is to get that outstanding player.

Ask Chelsea, spent hundreds of millions on the Academy but not had a player of note since John Terry. Loftus-Cheek is just about getting to the top level.

I read his article in the T&A of about a week ago. And that's where my confusion arises partially. I understood his role to be having responsibility for developing the players up to about 18. And yet Rahic has talked most about how developing the older recruits who are in the development squad (who incidentally so far have been recruited from other clubs and not come through the academy ranks) will potentially provide us with additional funds in the future to enhance the first team squad's budget. And yet this important aspect of Rahic's strategy wasn't mentioned by Drury. It doesn't yet appear to be fully joined up.
