Cat 3, same as ours. And they were ranked 57th compared to our 69th

How does that work? They have been universally praised regarding the running of their academy and its seen them recoup millions of pounds of revenue for the club whilst producing players for the first team yet only rank 12 places above us? Worryingly though its the only academy in league 2 that seems to bring in the moola. Can you really make a success of it when the odds are stacked so much against your favour?

In answer to this and your following post, that coherence depends upon the infrastructure surely. Agree with their strategy or not it's been some while (never, not even with BFG?), has there been such a professional approach to the club as a whole. Even with some of the gaffes one could criticize the overall approach would seem to one of taking care of business. The old cliché 'Rome wasn't built in a day' has to be thrown in here :bookworm:. So that hopefully we end up focused and able to present that coherent strategy and the appointment of a coach and the next couple of signings may give the supporters some inkling as to how far the new joined up thinking has progressed and perhaps present a clearer picture of the club's future.

I don't know the detail of how the success of the academy is assessed. But looking at our data, it appears that we are higher in the list than we should be because of the inclusion of past academy 'successes' with Delph and Wisdom who are currently playing in the PL! Exeter on the other have had far more success than us in recent times but their successes are limited to mainly to players plying their trade in Div 2.

I have my doubts about pinning our hopes on the academy route unless it is well staffed and well resourced. It's too easy in a large urbanised such as the M62 corridor for the big clubs to entice youngsters (or more likely youngsters' parents) from VP etc to the Etihad or Old Trafford or dare I say it these days to Huddersfield. Hanging onto talent should be that much easier for say Exeter where the competition is less strong than it would be for us imo.

Off topic but do you have any idea what the revenue is from the tv deals for league 1 and the championship?

I hope you're right and I agree it is early days for the new management. There was an encouraging sign for them wanting to do things differently when they replaced the old academy coaches with Sam Collins etc who I'm told introduced some new thinking. But hanging onto the best young talent will still be difficult with so many other bigger and better academies offering not just better facilities, better coaching, better education etc. And any compensation for those who are enticed away is limited under EPPP for an academy of our standing. And we still have the problem of all of these things - the academy, the development squad, the first team squad, the ground's infrastructure - drawing on the very limited resources of the club. If we to do all of these things well, difficult decisions will have to be made or we'll spread the jam too thinly and fail to make sufficient progress on any of them.

Totally agree. My only addition here would be, as I mentioned in another post, is it not better to tackle as many of the problems now before we hit, hopefully, the Championship and the sort of finance it takes just to put a side out?Notwithstanding the point that it will in all likelihood take a decent team to get there and the spends that could involve.

Could the forum withstand another year in 1 to have a better chance in the Championship?:eek::mad: Fully expect some flak for that!

The approx figures for the current Sky deal, incl the so-called Solidarity Payment paid to most EFL clubs by the PL are ..

Sky - Championship approx £7mill per club (flat fee)
    - Div 1 approx £0.7 mill per club (flat fee)

The current level of the Sky solidarity payments numbers have been discussed fairly openly but may well reduce slightly in the near future post the recent lower TV bids. I understand those discussions haven't been finalised as yet.

They may not have got anyone into their first team but how much have they brought in selling others on for a profit, that profit has then been used to buy first team players?

So do clubs get both of those? One from the EFL TV deal and one from PL ?

    Yes,
Basic awards are a share of the Sky TV rights for live games
The Solidarity Payments come from the PL

That's not covered Chelsea's costs of running an academy and paying all the hundreds of players they have in it. We both know that.

I’m not sure how much it costs but if they have sold a couple of players for over £5m each it will have cover
    A chunk of it

They've also been fined for tapping up youngsters too, I believe.

It's not paid dividends so far, although Loftus-Cheek looks quality.

But I very much doubt he'd get a regular start at Stamford Bridge.

Which is my point. The higher you go, the better quality you need, the harder it is to get that level from your academy.
