Andy Holt (Accrington owner) has suggested scrapping the FA Cup altogether

I’m not sure personally, as I see both sides of the argument

The reason for doing it is disgraceful no doubt.

However, in your hypothetical which only happens once every god knows how many years, Halifax beat United on penalties and Draw Liverpool away then they would have extra prize money and still a plump tie to boot. If this rule has been in place in 2015, we could have beaten Reading on penalties and been going to a semi final at Wembley, no one would have complained then.

Unfortunately lower league clubs can’t have it both ways, it’s okay saying well it’s better to not have to travel down to Exeter on a Tuesday night but then be hard done to missing out on a replay against a big club. The Exeter situation is far more likely. Also a lot complaining don’t even go to the early rounds, I go to every home FA cup game and it’s like a morgue, a replay of then games isn’t appealing at all. As Julian Rhodes once said, “use it or lose it”. If people wanting tickets for a game against United went to games against the likes of Harrogate we’d bring in much more revenue even without a big tie, that’s the same for other clubs as well.

Did they consider scrapping the League Cup and just sticking with the FA Cup? Do we need two domestic cups (excluding FL Trophy)? Other elite European nations only seen to have one?

I would remove the FL Trophy and just have the league cup for championship to league 2 clubs and remove PL clubs from it.

    Good call
If we had not had to play the FL trophy games, the pitch would be like a bowling green.

    My God Fordy
    Are you feeling alright.
I can not believe you are actually agreeing with other posters on here.
Thought you would have your Liverpool hat on.

This all seems to be part of a drive by the Premier League, to get as many changes (in their favour) in the game as they can, before the new regulator possibly gets in their way. Expect other attempted changes soon.

I don't think boycotting the FA Cup is the way forward (that would be cutting off our nose to spite our face), but the EFL needs to push hard to get an adequate level of compensation for these changes, especially as the announced changes will provide extra opportunities for the elite clubs to take part in more 'lucrative' matches.

The League Cup is huge financially for the EFL as I know it made up more than 50% of the TV money in the previous TV deal, the reason for that value is the Premier League clubs so taking them out it destroys the TV money for it. I don't see how it would improve it as the Championship clubs wouldn't care about it as there's no money in it for them and the European spot would be gone so they would just play their B teams. If the League cup goes the gap between the EFL and Premier League only increases. Other countries don't have the depth of quality we do in this country, the German Cup only has 64 teams in it, the Copa Del Ray only has 126 teams. No other countries have a 2nd tier competition organiser the size of the EFL with professional teams.

Looks like this is going to get even more messy. Claims that the calender including no replays was signed off by the professional game board which includes reps from the EFL and National League one of which is Rick Parry so it looks like the EFL are trying to get out of this on a technicality, they might not have been directly consulted but they knew about it.

All of these statements from club will achieve nothing other than appeasing a few fans, if we draw Exeter in the 1st round next season and the score is level at 90 minutes there won't be anyone saying they wish there was a replay instead of extra time.

If the EFL had any balls they'd kick the Premier U21 teams from the football league trophy forthwith, but they haven't so they won't

They play in division 2 of the Staffordshire County, they are 3 or 4 promotions from being eligible to play in the FA Cup so I think it's a joke to get engagement.

The EFL board have nothing to do with that, it is the clubs that vote for the format and they voted in favour of it. The EFL board is just competition organisers who apply the rules created by the members i.e. clubs, the board actually have very little power. Without the introduction of the U21 teams the competition was on the verge of being ended, there is more money in the competition than there was before.

Sadly, what the EFL think is only of secondary importance given they weren’t consulted! Decision has been made purely for the benefit of the PL.

to the big boys the cups are just an inconvenience. Some may use them as a route into Europe but, for the most part, even the FA Cup is an unwanted distraction.

Scrap the EFL Trophy it's a load of bab.

That should have always been the first move.

If the big 6 cannot fulfill FA Cup fixtures, replace them in the draw with a 5,000,000 pound prize (paid each season by each club opting out) and a bye.

Nobody is going to come out of this well. Like a lot of situations like they are probably both putting their version of the truth out there and manipulate it to reflect well on them. The real truth will be somewhere in the middle and we'll probably never find it out.

But it doesn't happen "every god knows when" though, does it Wilsden?
Every season there are lower league clubs that play out of their skins and earn a decent result against one of the bigger clubs.
It's a massive pay day for them for the replay which helps them massively.
Are they to be denied this just because the elite are having a "congested fixture list" (their words)?
Our football league would be nothing without our lower league and non league clubs.

When this seasons Premiership games are finished, guess what - Tottenham Hotspur v. Newcastle United exhibition game in Australia - just three days after!

The gaps in the schedule will be filled by other games in time, such as additional European ties.

All this "we play too many games" is nonsense. What they really mean is "we play too many games that aren't particularly lucrative enough".
