I expected Hughes to be an entertaining attacking manager when he first arrived. With his playing and managerial experience I expected him to be tactically one step ahead of the opponents, but his default 'go to' is defend first and foremost. We create very little, we haven't seen any inventive free kicks or patterns of play. We bring in a top assist and goal scoring midfielder, and then find he was nowhere near the opposition box (although I acknowledge its the first game). Cook was still feeding on scraps and we have wingbacks who can't cross their t's. Its becoming more and more evident to me, that he doesn't know how to set the team up to play on the front foot. As for the criticism he receives, if we aren't there or thereabouts come October, his pals at Skysports and within the game will be questioning why Mark Hughes hasn't managed to get a tune out of his team after 18 months. It's also interesting that we weren't selected for any live games last season. Is it because we were just a dull as dish water?

Got no issues at all with 'weird' results, it's the performances that give you an eye into what's ahead

Of course, but you remarked on engagement and made reference to the quality of research as opposed to no research quoted. I barely take any notice of stats they can be manipulated to represent a certain view.

Seems like you didn't bother to read my other posts..

    https://bantamtalk.com/index.php?threads/mark-hughes-poll-added.5967/page-56#post-777568

Again, its not hard to check something before posting.

maybe instead of just assuming I'm wrong just take a look at that. I don't really understand how you can mess with PPG stats. Im all ears if you have an idea as to how that could be manipulated.

“I dont like facts as facts are wrong in my view.”

    very interesting take! **so funny

A better manager would have had us up easily last season the reason we didn't was down to Hughes and to be badly outdone by Stevenage just proved that ............. I will stick by him but yesterday hopefully was a one off because frankly if that's the future then I doubt the VP faithful will be more patient this season..............Let's just hope what loan players are incoming actually make a big difference this time around

Bit harsh on Oyegoke, he was more of a victim of the new 'every foul a card' rule, thought he was unlucky....

The loan player quote is a good point. They made a big difference to us last season with Crichlow and Banks both having seasons that got them potential moves to a division above. And I don't I've seen a manager completely change his previous strategy like Hughes has done from the way he lined up last season. If he has a poor start to the season, as you allude to the fans will lose patience with him quickly

Like I say stupidity. Oyegoke should have cottoned on the card happy ref and doing that so soon after his first booking, wasn't the brightest thing to do.

That said, Smallwood and Taylor dropped him in it with their poor and feeble play leading up to it.

Absolutely harsh on Oyegoke yesterday he was well and truly sold down the river by our pass it back captain who doesn't have a forward pass on his radar and an injured centre half who doesn't look capable of trapping a bag of cement
Taylor has an Achilles problem but still selected over Platt (great confidence boost for the lad)
Ultimately it's down to the man who's picking the team and the tactics he employs
    Very Worrying !!!!!

How many times did it happen last season though ????? I know we play this way and it's risky but do it in the right areas not in one's that will put you in bother ........ the likes of Man City can do.it because they have players that can ..........we simply can't and if they could they wouldn't be gracing this league still expect more of the same other the next few months

The only crumb of positivity is that this must make them act in the window quickly. This messing around until the 31st is rubbish if we want someone pay what required - negotiate quicker cause if we don’t bring anyone in before Saturday this negativity is going to grow and grow. All Sparks Rupp, Hughes and Gents making but it’s fixable if they move quickly.

We’ve all done our bit 15k tickets , shirts, sold out away ends. Dig deep now and pay for the required quality.

If the time comes to replace Hughes we should go for Richie Wellens. Good pedigree at this level and still an ‘on the up’ manager, great playing style, was very complimentary about us as a club last season, from Manchester so the location may appeal. I think we’d get him.

We all debated the relevance of pre-season games and whether they matter or not.
The reality is they do matter because it gives the manager 5 or so games to work out the preferred selection / formation so that come the first league game we don’t have these pathetic excuses of ‘needing to gel’ ‘lacking fitness’ etc etc.
Putting out the kids at BPA was a disgrace as was the constant rotation of players at half time in every friendly.
Pick the team you think might start the season and if there are under performing players you drop them for next friendly.
That way you wein out the shite and start with the top performing hungry players who are up for the fight of league football.

It’s difficult to gauge pre-season and there’s an argument as to what a good pre-season looks like in terms of results. Looking at some results across the EFL yesterday, i think it’s likely there were a range of readiness levels, which will normalise over the next 2 or 3 weeks. For us though, we clearly don’t look ready. We haven’t recruited well enough or practiced the move to a back 3 well enough. Did that team yesterday, or any of the partnerships within it have any real playing time in our pre-season friendlies?

Why was Bobby Pointon not even on the bench yesterday?
He’s one of only a handful of bright spots during pre season.
No way should Ridehalge and Halliday have started yesterday. They are average beyond belief at full back let alone trying to play them as attacking wing backs.
The more I think about it the more I think Hughes is wrong for us on many levels
