Like it is worth remembering we got to a play off semi final - the first one in 5 years. And we had the 3rd best away record. We were actually decent last year and I think we are reading into this result too much. Banana skins happen all the time.

id rather get a loss out of the way now and learn from it

and it's not unreasonable to say we are less effective than in MH first 2 months at the club.

Eh? That team was actually awful.

Am just hoping RS has one eye on a replacement and looking for Darren Moore's number
You know as well as I do he will be "replaced" AFTER the January window
Our whole season rests on the weeks after he's gone
It's the way we roll !!!!

You are missing the point. It’s not about what Wrexham or Notts county do it’s what we do that counts. And after the big words about how we are going to be on the front foot all summer he plays five defenders in the first game. With the team he had he under achieved last year. Everyone his hoping that this time we will go one step farther but it’s a very bad start.

Just doing a bit of maths. The points per game average for his stint upon arrival in 21/22 was 1.38.

Last season it was 1.64. His 21/22 average would have seen us finish 9th last season so it wasn't a huge improvement. And in fact, if you give him a 'pass' for the first 2 games in charge, whilst he worked to understand what he had available, his 21/22 average was 1.63. Or in other words, our form last season was almost identical to that in 21/22 after his first fortnight in charge.

He isn't really improving us, and has now had 3 windows in charge.

When was the last time we had a manager who had a PPG of 1.63? Others are liking your post like its a good point but are in a shock the last time we did better than that. Even the season we got promoted out of L2 had a lower PPG….

That’s my worry. Whilst I think at this point the right thing to do is stick with Hughes and re-assess nearer Christmas, I think we’ll end up wasting another season. If I were Sparks, I’d be having a very, very direct chat with Hughes about expectations. There’s calmness that Hughes demonstrates which is probably brought about by experience, but it almost a borders on nonchalance and he hasn’t earned the right at this level yet. Given the backing he’s had, he’s underwhelmed without doing badly. But he really needs to kick things on and yesterday seems to have verified concerns that many have over our summer approach.

On the plus side, it’s salvageable, IF the club react quickly. I.e. drop this 352 nonsense, sign a proper centre back and a couple of wide men, OR sign proper wingbacks and a centre back.

It’s not so much that the PPG last season was bad, or that it was a ‘poor’ finish - though ultimately it was failure. And yes, it’s the first time for a few years we’ve done it, but those years represent abject failure.

I understand the divergence of opinion here and I’m a bit torn myself. I can see cases either way in terms of judging Hughes last season, but the key for me is that this summer and the next few weeks need to demonstrate that last season will be built upon and the flaws addressed. All else aside, we weren’t a million miles away last season and it looked a solid enough base for the summer. But we seem to have ripped that base up and removed the stability by moving to a back 5 and recruiting poorly. Early days this season, but yesterday is a huge red flag for me.

There is little evidence in all his managerial career that Hughes improves teams which is why he always gets the boot or mutual consent, The same will happen here its a recurrent theme with Hughes. We are just marking time till we move on

Wrexham were playing a side two leagues above last year.

Notts county have known limitations at the back and we're lucky to progress through all 3 playoff games with last minute goals. They were also playing a side who were a league above last year.

Bradford were playing a Crawley team tipped by many to finish bottom this season. A Crawley team who had 14 players on Monday and filled it with non league players. A team who on Wednesday didn't have a kit. A team who changed manager in the summer. A team who have had their best players sold by owners desperately trying to recuperate their investment. A basket case of a club with 4 managers last year and numerous other comings and goings. A club whose fans are desperately trying to over throw the owners.

    There's your difference

Lots of concerns following yesterday but not the time to panic. Getting rid now or even anytime in the next couple of months would be absolute madness.
There are always weird results early doors and yesterday was no exception. Some players are not up to full fitness and we've obviously got injuries to some who we'd expect to start if fit. There is also the expectation of some additional resource by the end of August, probably in the form of young loanees, I'd expect to see a very different looking group over the coming weeks. Of course we have to hope that the incomings are more like Wright and Banks than Costello and Nevers!
I'm not glossing over yesterday by any means but for me we can't really take stock of where we are in this league till October at the earliest.

Those conceded 5, who according to many on here said they would finish above us.

They were saying they got 100+ points so should be feared.

Youve proved my point. Slack against the opposition harsh against the club.

we conceded one on a free kick and then went down to 10… happens all the time to best of teams.

The loss against rochdale was harder to take than that one. To act like every game has no possibility of bad luck is ridiculous.

I think in the coming months if the Hughes system simply isn’t working and the players are getting stick from fans, we’ll see a revolt from senior players where they might start to ignore the negative tactics and try to express themselves going forwards.
Players like Walker and Pattison aren’t gonna sit there in midfield like lap Hughes lap dogs passing backwards continually.

People might like his post because they agree with it, you seem to like trying to gain some moral high ground but yours is only an opinion - like everyone else on here

how can you agree with something that disproves why you are liking it?

thats not a moral high ground, its me being logical.

I think you are confused, i am not making an opinion I am stating cold hard facts.

To disagree with facts does speaks volumes about current society.

everyone these days think any opinion is gold regardless of what any actual solid evidence might suggest.

“hur duh Hughes is naff look at this PPG”

“actually his PPG compared to other city managers is the best”

My opinion is people are proper daft man, just waffle nonsense with zero base in fact. Makes for no useful argument/debate/conversation.

it’s difficult to prove someone wrong when they don’t actually believe in facts to formulate opinions

Having both Walker and Pattison in the team yesterday didn’t work at all.

MH has a tough call to make on Smallwood also because he’s not great for us.

I’m sticking with MH but I want to see big calls soon and changes.

You might achieve better engagement if you turn down the superiority complex. This is a fan debate on all things city. It doesn’t matter how ppl express themselves or whether they have been fortunate enough to receive a higher education or not. We are all equal on here and everyone’s view and opinion is valid.

'Some players are not up to full fitness'?. What the hell have they been doing all July then?.

Crawley were mainly cobbled together last week, did they have a fitness issue yesterday?

It wasn't fitness that did for us yesterday, it was the bonkers selection, formation and tactics deployed by Hughes and the stupidity of Oyegoke

Its not that hard to check to use facts to formulate opinions rather than just liking everything that people think sounds good.

Why do people think politicians fare so well?

And even then, if my opinion is to “feel superior” then by your admission what i say is “equal and valid”

    so is it or not?
