big about face by the club in less than a year. It was decided we needed recruitment men as we kept employing managers who signed 15 players to play one style of football then promptly sacked them, leaving the new manager to come again and sign a different 15 players to suit his style. This Smacks of Derek putting his foot down personally.

Will change again next year once he's gone

I hope its a case of bringing in someone else to fill the role and not reverting back to the stone ages and leaving recruitment solely to the manager.

The most successful manager we've had in recent times buggered off as soon as he realised interference was coming. Get a decent manager and for pity's sake just let him get on with managing.

I'm not even sure Canavan is. He looks very slow and cumbersome to me and partnered with someone equally lacking pace like POC we look very shaky when there's a ball in behind. We used to have pace at left back and Wood got us out of trouble at times but neither full back has that capability at present.

Well let’s be honest…. bringing in Robinson from Port Vale was a sackable offence in itself, particularly when we needed a GOAL SCORER!

I disagree. How many windows over the last 5 years or so have we had to rip everything up and start again? Every single one is the answer. Add in a few January windows in there too. And thats because we're going through managers like there's no tomorrow and there's no consistency in the type of player they sign. It doesn't matter whether you're signing £100m players, free agents or loans, you need a level of consistency within the football department, independent of the manager, otherwise you get chaos every window.

At this level more than anything, where money is tight, you need to buy the very best you can with the monies available. That requires extensive work in the backroom to identify players and negotiate with agents/clubs. A manager can't do that as well as focus on first team matters, there's just not enough hours in the day.

What I will say though, is you have to do it properly, no shortcuts and appointing the wrong people.

But I think a recruitment director/DOF/ whatever you want to call it is absolutely essential in the modern game.

I've seen both of Robinson's sub appearances, albeit they were fleeting, and he's had a decent chance each time. Lavery on the other hand, whilst not playing much more, I'm not sure has even made it into the opposition penalty area!

Ideally we'd have signed neither and combined their wage to sign one better striker.

I am not trying to be cyclical but I hope he hasn’t been sold a tall tale to get him here only to be sold short.
If he’s been promised a strong budget with good recruitment links, you only have to look at our last two windows to know that’s not the case. I can’t for the life of me understand why we would wait until this window closed to remove Turnbull if we know Adams wanted his own men in?
This smacks to me of Adams has said it’s no where near good enough and either he goes or we let him take over control of all areas?

we’ve had a lot of good media sound bites but not a lot of good action in the last 12 months IMO

Manager Derek Adams will announce a restructure to the club’s recruitment department in the coming weeks.
I might be wide the mark here but it wouldn't surprise me at all, if someone out there as become available who Derek has worked with before.
Today's news would suggest Adam's is now starting to assert himself at VP having taken stock, he's gathered his thoughts and seemingly now knows the mammoth task in hand to get Bradford City moving in the right direction.
Every move Adam's makes will be scrutinized and dissected by media and fans alike in the coming months.
The big question is can he pull off promotion were others have failed miserably or will he too become another victim of the management merry go round only time will tell.

Whatever Adams wants, he should get, including full control over transfers. Clearly not happy about Lavery and Robinson. Saved a wage now. In Dezza we trust.

I understand why the director of football role is employed at elite clubs. Working with premium talent. It works across Europe.

it is not needed in League 2. It didnt work under Archie Christie, nor has it worked under Turnbull.

We’re shopping in the bargain bin and signing free transfers. The players are very limited and I think success is more about finding players who click with your manager at this level. Player ability is narrow across the league.

having a DoF is an unnecessary step, confusing matters.

I find this mind blowing to be honest what about the way this club has been run since Richmond suggests we're getting it right and everything is just fine as it is just hire a new manager and give them total control and hope for the best and fail to plan forwards

I cannot disagree more strongly with your stance yes we know the players are the cheapest in the EFL we know the players don't or at least shouldn't cost fees we know we aren't likely to sign many top class footballers who can play multiple positions tactics and formations extremely well but what has that got to do with the failure to put in an overarching plan

Directors of Football or Heads of Recruitment whatever you want to call them should be the first thing installed before the club appoints a manager before the club puts a coaching team in place and before we sign a single player IF we're going to be consistent and actually do something on the field

I cannot understand how any club can just move from manager to manager to manager based on a resume and based purely on success when it's so obvious that it takes at least a year (or sometimes two) to shift on all those players that the manager might not want and why might that manager not want them well in Bradford's case it would be because the manager has picked up the reins from another manager who he has absolutely nothing in common with who plays a totally different style of football that requires totally different players because as you say these lads at this level are limited

Now if you were going to turn round and tell me don't worry that's the chairman's job or the owner's job or the CEO's job then that would make sense if those positions had been fixed for some time and the people in those positions had proven themselves okay fine they know what they're doing they'll hire someone to build on what Adams is doing even if Adams fails but NONE OF THAT IS TRUE!! Not one single thing has been constant or consistent at this club not one single person has been here for a decade or more (that matters) and it's of absolutely no surprise to see that we're struggling as a result

Sort the club out decide on a philosophy decide what the club is decide what a Bradford City player looks like and go from there and the club should have the balls to turn round to anyone involved at the club and say 'sorry that's not a Bradford City player' and actually try to (FOR ONCEEEE) future-proof this club by understanding what they're doing and why and not just to please a manager when those managers have failed over and over and over and over again with the single exception of Phil Parkinson

I'm sorry I got carried away lol rant over

    Last minute?

Angol was injured in the 17th August and the window shut on 31st August. That's two whole weeks to identify and bring in a target which should be ample time given that a good scouting network should always have future targets identified anyway.

Stop making excuses for them, nobody is expecting Ronaldo, but if Sparks and Rupp want Adams to get promotions they have to fund it properly.

I think you need someone with football knowledge on the board or in a senior position. Otherwise when the manager is asking for resources how do you assess whether he is right or not. How do you know you’re getting the right manager. As well as Posh’s role in developing players, and not all their signings are successful, I also like the idea of not having to change the whole squad when the manager leaves because they’re ‘his’ players or the new man plays a different system.
In a well run system, Sparks and Rupp will have a continuously updated shortlist of managers/coaches to replace Adams who can come in and continue his philosophy and get results without having to release and sign a new squad. Same for each position in the squad. I don’t think you can expect a manager to do all that and focus on success on the pitch. Hard job being a manager, setting your self up for failure if you want to do everything, world has moved on since the days of Clough.

Turnbull was required last year as we were a ship without a rudder following last seasons disastrous summer transfer window.

The signings have been somewhat fair to middling since he was appointed and I did wonder who would have the main say over the transfers during the recent window - Turnbull or Adams. The influx of ex-Scunthorpe players does very much have the feel of Turnbull having a big say in recruitment, which maybe Adams didn’t like.

The article explains that Adams will announce a restructure to the clubs recruitment soon - bringing in his own trusted team? Anyone know how recruitment was ran at his previous clubs?

Looks to me like we tried the modern sporting director/recruitment director route and have turned our back on it in less than a year. Kudos for changing something which isn’t working but on the back of sacking Stuart a fortnight after a new contract it’s arguably a sign of a lack of judgment in recruitment

I like the way Adams gets a free ride on the transfers and the new fall guy, Turnbull, gets the stick.

I'm sure Adams has had no say or input into the squad that collectively has been assembled over the last few months.

Too many riding the coat tails of Adams.
