He played nearly every game last season in a play off attaining side. He ain't gonna sit on the bench in league 2.

 

Looks like this has been a done deal for a while. Parker's on holiday but still managed to write the article in the T&A.

Gilliead wasn't the problem. Far worse performers than him. Two factors for me that still see us in league 2, a manager who i hope knows where he went wrong and in imbalance in midfield that saw us lacking pace all over.

 

I disagree. Gillead was an integral part of the problem as he neither defended well or contributed in attack. How many times have we had players that can "run around a lot" and certainly put in the effort but barely effect games?

Gillead was one of the first players we desperately needed to replace if we had ambitions of challenging again this season.

 

Perhaps as a first 11 player Dave you may well be right, but a good one on the bench and in the back up squad. On that basis I’d offer him a deal. A sticking point maybe they have only offered him 12 months?

 

Surely its Hughes thats the problem not the player then? Cos Gilliead doesn't pick himself. MacDonald probably is the replacement for Gilliead who is too good to be a squad player in league 2. He might not now get a start at Bradford but he would in half of teams in league 2. Thats not me saying we should keep Gilliead btw, its clear the midfield needs changing as its too slow and lacks creativity.

 

Gilliead hasn't found another club at the moment but didn't want to rush and take City's offer,

McDonald 2 year deal,Taylor 2 year deal, Ridehalgh 1 with an option of another so i would guess Alex was similar
Just Oduor brought in on a 3 year deal (and we dont know where Hughes is playing him yet)
And of course the Cookie Monster re-signed

 

I thought defensively he did OK, tracked back and covered well. He is such a frustrating player because he seems to have it all. Good engine, decent pace, good footwork, can beat a man. He's not even that bad in the air. He just can't seem to put any of it together to any effect.

 

Completely agree with that, it's a point I made at various times last year. He just needed to be braver and take the risk of either shooting or even losing the ball higher up the pitch now and again.

I think I've just lost patience now though and believe, looking back at his complete career stats then he's either just not got the mentality to kick on or that I've completely misjudged his ability to.

 

It is difficult to judge what he is now. He certainly ain't an attacker in any sense cos he doesn't have a killer pass nor does he shoot or take anyone on which is what his game was apparently based around in his first stint with us on loan. Alleged to have the best engine in the squad in terms of fitness but never really strikes me as a defensive midfielder. To me now he's an honest grafter who'll put in a shift but never really stands out at anything he does.

 

The most consistent players rarely stand out. All of us on here think we are quite knowledgeable about the game but there have been a number of players in the past that we have been dismissive of who have then gone off to have an impact elsewhere. Probably with the exception of Josh Wright of course.
