'Jokes' which might offend

You are correct in that blazing saddles was a comedy classic. But i'm being really honest with you here, todays world does not allow for satire, its a world of people looking to be offended at the slightest opportunity. The younger generation of today wouldn't understand the self deprecation of the film becuase they wouldn't be able to get past a white man saying nigger without losing their shit.

No, the white guy welcoming the new sheriff says it as does the old woman when the sheriff introduces himself. Tanrantino used it in his movies and it was used in Full Metal Jacket but I can't remember a recent film where I've seen the use.

Of course the whole film is satire and it's narrative on racism is actually cutting and amazing...."You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know... morons"....is an great line to underpin the whole ethos of the project, as is the one about the Irish when they're building the town. As a young boy it probably taught me more about the stupidity of racism than anything at school.

But if you think the two clips that I've found (and a hell of a lot more!) would fly now or aren't taboo then I don't know what to say.

I'd only seen bits of the office and it wasn't really my thing so gave the rest a swerve.

I'm still not convinced you're right. It is soooo obviously satire and such a brilliant debunking of racism I think there would still be a ready audience for it.

I've actually just started watching it again because searching for those clips reminded me of the brilliance if it. They actually have white characters say n****** twice and fa****t within the first 5 minutes. I find it quite interesting how you initially remembered it as a much more sanitised version. To say the dialogue are not currently taboo is clearly wrong

I'm sure there would be an audience for it now but there would also be an ENORMOUS amount of criticism of it if it was made in the modern area because a lot of people make a point of taking offence and lose any idea of nuance or context.

 

That audience would be very niche and would have probably been ostracised on social media as being 'gammon' or 'Brexit voting racists'. Today's society doesn't do satire very well, it doesn't fit the social media narrative of today of completely ignoring any forms of context.

 

The fact that BBC removed Little Britain, something written by two of the most politically correct people going who then felt pressured into apologising for it shows that people can make any argument they want but most classical comedy even though much of it was written by liberal writers wouldn’t be accepted today. I can’t think of any genuine funny modern sitcom or movie, Satire is a dying art.
