It's not the humour part, it's just not funny?

What? Nothing has been cancelled, it’s about treating people with respect. There are boundaries. Racism isn’t funny, mysogyny isn’t. If racism or mysogyny make you laugh then yes, you should stop and ask yourself is that ok. Donald Trump mocking disabled people isn’t ok. That’s not cancel culture, being woke or whatever, it’s just treating everybody with respect. The reason Jim Davidson isn’t getting many gigs on TV isn’t because of cancel culture, it’s because his racist or sexist sketches aren’t funny.

A sad world when you are told what to laugh at by thought police. Some things are clearly abusive but then humour is subjective. But then from my own perspective I am very very hard to offend when it comes to comedy.

What I laugh at has nothing to do with you. You know nothing of my sense of humour or what I find acceptable or not acceptable. You might be surprised to find being a working class white van driver I don't go out of my way to offend people, very rarely someone may be offended by my take on a joke or by something I find amusing. I'm gonna be honest with you, in a world where people routinely kill each other, rape each other, where kids are regularly abused, there are a lot more things that I can be offended by than someone worrying about what I think of a joke. I think it's called each to their own.

The point is that if sexist, racist, homophobic, disability or other such discriminatory humour still makes a person laugh without thinking in this day and age then it is that person who has the problem, not society, or 'cancel culture' or any such 'anti-woke' bollocks.
It's no longer seen as acceptable to base humour on taking the piss out of less fortunate/minority/discriminated against people because of their physical or mental characteristics or, in the case of women, old fashioned sexist ideas about their role in life. People who complain about 'political correctness gone mad' etc regarding humour, are usually people with outdated, bigoted social attitudes who resent the fact that they are no longer able to laugh at humour based on taking the piss out of those less fortunate than themselves.

Since when? There is even a sparate thread where posters can share their jokes with the rest of us. There is nothing to stop you laughing out loud if you want to!

We will however continue to remove sexist and racist and other offensive material whether in the Joke thread or elsewhere on the site. Some might want to continue living in the 60's and 70's when so-called humour including sexist and racist material was widely accepted. Society has however moved on in the past 50 years and what might have been acceptable then may well these days be considered offensive or worse. Times have changed and that's just how it is now whether you like it or not.

I think you just made my point.

Social attitudes change over time. We used to allow bear-baiting and c0ck fighting, and rich people had no problem with young children climbing their chimneys to sweep them. Now we don't do those things.
In the same way, we used to have people and programmes on TV that based their humour on racism, misogyny, homophobia and disableism. Now we don't.
As social attitudes evolve there are always some people who find it hard to leave the old, discredited ways behind.

I'd never go out of my way to deliberately offend someone. But I think its all about context. I don't think any topic should be 'off limits' as such.

True Mike, but if he'd thrown his shirt at her and shouted " iron this when you've got a minute love", that'd have worked

You may, of course, laugh at what you like. And I, in turn, may challenge the things you find funny. If you you decide to take such things personally and lash out with phrases such as 'laughter police', 'political correctness', and 'woke'* in order to denigrate something you refuse to understand, it shows that, as you say, you'd rather not think about things. Which is also your right. I don't understand why, in order to defend your stance, you must seek to put down those who challenge it. It is the language of the bully. Trump did it with the disabled, war veterans, ethnic minorities, and more. Johnson did it with his 'picaninies' comment, and others. Another phrase is 'snowflake'. Used to suggest that people who don't like the right wing macho world we currently live in are weak and pathetic. Frankly, it is increasingly obvious that the real 'snowflakes' are the ones crying because they are being called out for bullying people. It's all very well to feign innocence and say 'oh, why can't we just laugh at each other' when we're not really laughing at each other, are we? I get that it's hard to have your safe protected world challenged but if maybe you could think for just a little bit, you might see that no one wants to stop you laughing at what people do, they'd maybe just like you to stop laughing at who they are.

*See also 'happy clapper' and many others used on this forum to suggest intellectual/moral/football/economic superiority over someone who either has a different opinion or even offers a comment that turns out to be mistaken, misguided, or simply incorrect.

Yes i have thanks. And yes, the black community uses the word on a daily basis. But apparently we must know it as the 'N' word. The word nigger is just a word until you add context to it. See, the word context seems to escape people these days and what we end up with is an incident of graffiti being written on Marcus Rashfords 'shrine' becomes a major racist incident with people actually bothering to read what was written.
Now, when the word nigger was used in blazing saddles, it was used for comedy effect in where the joke of the film was aimed predominantly at the white slave workers. I agree in a sense that people should understand wht the film is trying to portray. But i guarantee you now that if this film is shown now on the BBC it will be preceded by a warnignthat some may find this film upsetting. Wouldn't surprise me if they gave a number for counselling at the end for those affected by what they saw in the show. (Just for clarification the last bit is satire)

:joy: Now, that's funny! Aww. Bless. Why don't you take a knee in defence of those tired old sexist stereotypes? Oh, no. That's right! You don't have to. You're only in the poor downtrodden majority. It must be SO frustrating. : unamused:
