Very late on parade here...

As far as the line that started all this, a quick-witted lino, provided she heard the comment, could well have replied:

"It doesn't suit me!"

Maybe that's just an obvious response for those of us who grew up with Milligan & co. and that whole rich vein of absurdist comedy that runs easily from ITMA through the Goons and Beyond the Fringe to the Pythons and their descendants. Indeed the Goons did use that particular line and comeback (Henry and Min the speakers, but I can't remember which episode).

And otherwise, context, as has been pointed out, is always important. Some of you might remember my story from the old C&B days, of a whiter-than-white colleague who was once told by a black man in America that he (my colleague) could call him (the black man) a nigger whereas other whites in their group could not. In their particular context it all made sense, but as my colleague knew, that was not an invitation to use the term elsewhere, or to others.

Ultimately, it's a question of manners, though comedy has sometimes to run very close to the borders.

I have the Jilted John album. There's a wonderful song on it called Pre-pubescent which my brother and I used to busk in York in the early 80s. Lyrical genius.

 

I never realised there was a whole album.

I love it when a made up argument about films not being shown is backed up by posting clips that can literally be watched at the click of a button. Priceless.

And yes, satirical comedies that might be considered taboo are still made. Family Guy, Any Sacha Baron Cohen film, for example. It’s such a nonsensical argument to suggest they’re not.

 

Weirdly enough I don't think I said they wouldn't be shown. I said they wouldn't be written in the same way? Reading and compression is usually quite important.

And yes, some thin push the boundaries still. Not quite in the same way and they usually come with heavy criticism and complaints, which was the actual point.

 

But they always did. 'Til Death Us Do Part was always being complained about. Life of Brian likewise. Joe Orton, Lenny Bruce, Derek and Clive, you name it

 

I'm not sure its the same. Social media in particular has amplified the voices.

 

Yes, but for everyone on social media who complain there's an equal number who post to support.

This site is addictive enough. Twitter would take over my life, so I avoid it.

 

Its not nonsensical at all. Various episodes of Southpark have been banned over the years, much to the annoyance of the creators of the show. If and when Dambusters is remade again lets see what Guy Gibsons dog is called.

 

You do right to avoid it. Shame in a sense because there are some great contributers with good debate to be had, unfortunately the lack of intelligence amongst the general public means any decent debate ends up in a feckwit free for all.
