The ultimate ambition in football is both success on the pitch and profit off it.

Unfortunately the latter part has definitely been forgotten by owners and chairmen who are less ambitious than they are foolish.

Loaded lawyers syndrome, happen's far too often, plus the super rich don't like being upset even tho they do just as they want, how they want.

Just been thinking of some of the marquee signings we’ve made over the years and it’s not great reading

    Aaron McLean
    Paul Anderson
    Mark Yeates
    Sean Scannell
    Hope Akpan
    Jacob Butterfield
    Clayton Donaldson
    Jack Payne
    Eoin Doyle
    James Vaughan.

A combination of players who for the most part didn’t want to be here or simply weren’t good enough. Lots of lessons to be learnt here. If right now we were offered 2 players to replace James Vaughan- Will Grigg or that lad from Boreham Wood I’m taking the latter all day long. We need to stop signing journey men on their way down based on previous reputations. It very rarely works out for us.

Our best signings of recent years have been loan signings who all have gone on to better things, players such as Josh Cullen, Reece Burke, Lee Evans, Adam Reach, Lewis O'Brien, Jordan Pickford etc. Our club has no real strategy to its transfer signings as shown by our desperately bad transfer windows of the last three years or so, last January being a real low. Hopefully the signing of Cooke and Watt shows a strategy aimed toward younger players targeted for their potential to develop rather than over paid journeymen.

Agree 100%. It's been posted in the new rumours thread this morning that Agard is a done deal. If true, I'd be disappointed as it shows that yet again, we've learnt nothing.

Bolton have signed a couple of good players but have also invested in players from non league clubs to develop and provide younger competition,

As I said on the transfer rumours site and taking in the Cooke and Watt example you use here plus the loanees in Cullen et al, would a further young, upcoming player from the (development/non) league or loan player be the correct time? None of the players you have listed ultimately play up top....
To fire us to promotion /or at least challenge, we need goals and our current 3/4 "forwards" look to be way short of the quality needed to fire us there.... So rookie now in this vital area of the pitch or go with more experience?

Would you take the risk of such an important position? You could end up with a Joe Riley, a James Meredith or somewhere in between? (sorry couldn't engage my tired brain into thinking if examples up front... Well Ross Hannah, Kai BRUNKER..)

Unfortunatly we have an owner who is not "ambitious" with regards his club, but to be fair to Rupp he's been as good as his word keeping the club afloat in bad times, but until Rupp sells IMO this will continue and the clubs success/failure will depend on what Stuart can get from his squad of players.

It's a good question. All teams are looking for that mythical 20 goal a season man, Bolton a prime example giving Doyle a three year contract. Personally I think it will bite them on the arse. Personally I would go with a younger player with potential, ultimately the two player sales that have kept this club afloat were the very player you're talking about, developing them should be a pre requisite of any team with the aim of self sustainability. Which I'm told is what our club is looking for.

wood, watt, paudie last year. Are young players hopefully on the way up. Sutton and dmh ,young but dont know how far they might progress if at all. Riley was young and from man u , has not progressed. it is a gamble signing any -player, no matter the age.
