Good evening from a terrier... Just like to say you have landed a good player in Jack Payne! Always tries to play at a fast tempo, and well capable of getting into double figures if he gets a good run in the team
Through one thing and another he found himself the season before last in the championship frozen out and the club decided to loan him out to Oxford and Blackburn to give him game time.
Now we need to shift a few players out who are not going to get into our 25 match day squad so he was always going to be allowed out, although I thought it could have been to a championship club, no affence intended.
Anyhow hope he does well for you and best of luck for the season!

Hello there. My first posting ............. errhhhh - that's because I am a Southend United fan really.

Came on to read about your thoughts on Jack Payne - a lad that was "developed" at Roots Hall before being sold to Huddersfield.

I have seen him play on a number of occasions. Excellent with the ball at his feet - and he has quick feet and good ball control - he can jink into the box and slide the ball into the net. Very much an attacking type player. For this level he is an exciting find when on his game. He likes to roam around getting the ball where he can and that causes the opposition some difficulty in marking him.

On the downside, Payne can be "taken out" of the game at times by physically stronger players and teams who stop him getting the ball. There were questions about his ability to last 90 minutes but he is a few years older now so I suspect that is no longer an issue. Tracking back is not a great strength but that's not what he is on the pitch for. I would say he would do better on good quality surfaces and I know you have had some issues at Valley Parade.

But the biggest question over Payne when he was at Southend was "what position does he play?" If we played him as a midfielder then we would be "light" when defending and he isn't an out and out striker.

Some Southend fans thought manager Phil Brown never really knew how to make the best of him and Payne divided opinions as to whether he should be in the team - some saw him as a potential match winner, others thought his presence weakened the overall 11.

So it will be very interesting to see how your new manager plans to use Jack Payne.

Contract up at the end of the season apparently. Could we potentially sign him in Jan if all goes well?

Now this is the sort of loan signing that makes sense, the lad has done it and worn the t shirt at a higher level. We will definitely benefit getting this lad.

We have made some very good signings this summer there can not be any grumbles there The question is if Collins can make them into a team

To be fair to Collins (and lets give him some credit even if it is done by committee) he indicated after Saturday that some of the players given a go so far had not pulled up any trees and these 2 loans look to be a step up - so well done mate!

Our most exciting signing since Cullen came back.

If we can add a quality striker - two assuming Wyke goes - I might have to start unshitting myself for the season ahead.

You are either referring to my planned cycle ride or the friendly against Leeds Nil - I suspect the later.

I used to play 5-a-side sometimes with a Leeds fan - remember when they were in European competitions and doing well? This lad asked me who I supported and I said "Southend United" (although I suspect my Shrimper football shirt gave the game away to most people).

"You must support a top team as well" he said. The temptation to tell him to "do one" was very high.

Of course a couple of seasons later not only were Leeds playing Southend in Division 2 but then Division 3. It still brings back happy memories when I met him again and asked him who he supported.

    "Leeds (Nil)" he said.

"You must support a top team as well" I replied .............................

That's one that makes you sit up and think we could compete. He's impressed whenever I've seen him play and certainly could be that creative link that we've been missing.

    Loan or not, great signing.

As i understand it, we have him on a season long deal with no re-call clause. Spoken to a couple of town fans who really rate him, and are amazed he hasn't gone out to a championship team. Really good addition to the squad expecting big things from him next season, come on Charlie sign a new contract and make my week, you know it makes sense!!

Very good signing, and one of the few I've seen play so can comment on. Changed the game when he came on for Oxford last season, in a game we should have already been out of sight in. Very direct and attacking midfielder, unlike a Billy Clarke or McCarten you know exactly what he is, and plays the role well. Two more strikers of this calibre and we'd be laughing.

One of my neighbours is a long standing Town supporter and he echoes what you've posted although he didn't know anything about a recall clause or not. He believes that he is a Championship standard player and expected him to go on loan to a championship club for the coming season. He's not convinced that he is PL quality (he can go missing) so doesn't expect Town to exercise their option if they remain in the PL for the following season.

I hope it works out for him and for us for next season.
