£3.5 million wage bill? Well, well. Anyone who thought Shrewsbury were a club to follow might have to think again, i don't think our wage budget comes near that.

That's not correct. Care is required when quoting from a company's financial accounts. The figure quoted in the the accounts for employee costs is not just the playing budget. It includes the salaries etc for every one of their employees incl both playing staff and non-playing staff such as coaches, admin staff, match day staff etc. It would be quite wrong to say that their £3.5m spent on all employees equates to a playing budget of the same value.

But credit to Shrews for publishing their full accounts incl the P&L. Other clubs could take notice.

There budget is self generated if they hadn’t sold developed players or had the cup run they wouldn’t have the budget. Similarly if Wyke had lived up to expectations and we sold him for big money or we had beaten Millwall we would have the budget. In other words we have to earn it to spend it

Eh? Whats that got to do with how much they are given as a wage budget? The point is others have used Shrewsbury as some sort of marker as to what teams with a low budget can do. They are one of the better payers in the division.

Thanks for the correction Dennis. I'd guess that might still give a playing budget around £2-£2.5m, which would maybe put their playing budget just above half way? Playing budgets usually exceed the non-playing side by a decent margin and Shrewsbury only averaged 5500 crowds. I admit I quoted that article mistakenly and so getting the actual playing budget from that is guesswork. Apologies if I have misled.

Because they have used their resources well to develop players to sell and so made it possible to set a reasonable budget. Which is exactly what our owners want to do. So Shrewsbury are good example

I'm still not sure it's fair to compare to Shrewsbury. Their income went from £4m to £6.9m and back to £4.7m in the last 3 completed seasons. The last two generated profits of £1.3m (Man U, Cardiff and Sheff W in FA Cup) and £400k . The strong position this left them in would probably not be typical. How often might they play two higher division teams and Man Utd in a cup run? They also benefitted from player sales, which could be typical, and a land sale, which would not. I doubt we have the infrastructure or skills off the pitch to match them for now anyway. What it does show is what a difference a good cup run makes. But you can't plan for it!

This article says admin costs were around £750k out of salaries of £3.5m last year. It still suggests a healthy playing budget for League 1.
