Of course I'm not overlooking that. I'm not an idiot. Obviously it was a terrible, and very stupid, decision to go there. But she and her friends, all fifteen years old, were targeted and carefully groomed by persuasive older men who no doubt made them feel very special and sold them all kinds of wild fantasies about the paradise on earth they would experience there. Of course it was all nonsense, but they aren't the first and won't be the last impressionable teenage girls to be seduced by charismatic older men. It's very similar to the process that occurs with vulnerable young teenage girls who are made to feel special by older 'boyfriends' and then end up being forced into prostitution. I've seen how that works in my professional experience.

I'm not saying we should welcome her, or others like her, back with open arms. Obviously if she comes back she will have to face the consequences of her actions, which would include security service interrogation and likely prosecution and jail time. But it's complex. According to some experts in Islamic radicalisation, being ultra-tough by refusing to allow her back may play into the radicalisation narrative of evil western persecution of Islam and, perversely, actually create more radicalisation in future.
No easy answers here.
You think anyone who can see more than one side to it is just a bleeding heart liberal, but that's not the point. The point is that the world just isn't as simplistic as you authoritarian right wingers like to imagine. Tough actions sometimes produce the opposite of what you're trying to achieve. Look at that dickhead Gavin Williamson. Talking tough has just scuppered a lucrative trade deal with China.
