I completely do. It isn't downplaying it, is adopting realism. 600,000 people a year die. If we are going to avoid death and disease by hiding away, wearing masks, not hugging, not working, and completely trashing the world economy for many generations to come then life is hardly worth living.
Never in the history of mankind of we hidden away in this way from a virus. Never have we instigated such fear and anxiety into the whole population, and announced death figures on a nightly basis (well, they did until the death figures became so low it was no longer frightening people).
I live in a place where there hasn't been a single case of CV, let alone a death, for over two months, and yet I walk out of my door and people, young and old are walking around in masks like the bubonic plague is in town. And young people are wearing masks like they're a badge of honour and a fashion statement.
And yet only yesterday I spoke to someone who works in one of the biggest local hospitals (not in Bradford) and he told me how many positive CV cases they currently had ... ONE!!!
The impact and disruption has been MASSIVE, but it isn't the impact and disruption caused by CV, it is the impact and disruption caused by the fear-mongering and anxiety-building propaganda.
Ever since man first walked the earth there have been viruses, and every single time we have built up immunity and ultimately flourished. We have not hidden away like petrified beings. Yes, people have died. Alas, that is how viruses work. But then we, as a species, build up resistance. We gain immunity. As a species we will not build immunity by locking ourselves away - indeed that is exactly what not to do.
Yes, isolate the vulnerable and take sensible steps to protect them, but for the sake of the children (if not for ourselves) we need to get back to normality as soon as possible and stop this rampant culture of fear for a virus that already seems to have run out of steam.
And at the same time we all need to do what we can to get healthy and build our immunity, and that includes exercise, supplementation, good diet, and LESS anxiety.
Phew, glad to get that off my chest

Can’t remember where I read it but 1390 people have lost their lives to Covid, without a pre existing medical condition. There’s over 60 million people in this country. The death rate is beyond minuscule. I’d hazard a guess more people lose their life to the common flu each year, or certainly not significantly less, and life goes on. I’m no Covid denier but I think it’s been massively over played for a huge number of the general population who don’t have under lying health issues, even then the death rate is tiny.

Flu doesn't even come close for how quick it spreads.
If you worked somewhere like I do and have seen how fast and how devastating it can be your views may change.
Ravaged my work and it was awful to see . -

As far as those with underlying health conditions that make them more susceptible to COVID-19 are concerned, well the estimate is that that amounts to 22.4% of the population: https://www.lshtm.ac.uk/newsevents/news/2020/estimates-suggest-one-five-people-worldwide-have-underlying-health-condition. Many of that 22.4% will be totally unaware that they are risk; remember, roughly 2% to 3% were on the shielded list, so there will be a lot of people out there blissfully unaware that they are at risk.
The continuation, or not, of this forthcoming season will not only depend on how many football club staff and players test positive, but also on how well we protect that 22.4% of the population.
EDIT: Oh, and that 22.4% of the world population rises to 31% in Europe. Take out the under 18s and you are not that far short of half the adult population in the UK.Stop hovering to collapse... Our players haven't got within 2m of the opposition for about three years so very little chance of them catching it during a match........

I prefer to look at excess deaths. For the year to date, that is 53k.
https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/bulletins/deathsregisteredweeklyinenglandandwalesprovisional/weekending14august2020
Adjust for the rising deaths due to the WWII baby boomer demographic that would see an extra 21k die this year (14k for 2/3rds to Aug) compared to the 5-year average and excess deaths so far in 2020 are 39k. A moderate flu outbreak excess is about 15-20k and a severe flu outbreak is more like 40-50k (even more back in the 50s and 60s before better diet and vaccinations and with colder weather). So, excess deaths so far this year are approaching the level one might expect of a bad flu year. -

I don't know if anybody follows the NFL or watches Hard Knocks... But it gives a really good insight into how they've been dealing with Covid-19 in preseason.
The level they go to is something probably only the Premier League could afford in this country. Daily testing, special technology to monitor how close each player is to another player and for how long, broken down by when they are actively running routes and drills and when they aren't. Massive semi-permanent structures built for team meetings, lunches, gym time etc. Individual booths in the dressing rooms. I believe they've even developed helmets that periodically take temperature checks.
And even then they've had over 60 positive tests.
There's no way clubs at our level can afford measures like this... And with such a small squad this season... And presumably smaller squads overall due to the salary cap, I'd be very surprised if we finish the season, or finish on time.Stop hovering to collapse... Click to collapse... Hover to expand... If it does, it might lead to lots of disruptions as you suggest in an already crowded schedule. If it doesn't, the clubs will just have to get on with it as they would if a player went down with an illness.Interested Bystander likes this. -
