Many people don’t want to make changes, and especially if they are being told by a teenager. Yet, we see how inept some grown ups can be at running things and we get told constantly how politicians are all apparently liars etc, no doubt by the same people. So it crosses age boundaries, still i think many do ‘listen’ more to them secretly, than they claim.

I think it boils down to many just not wanting to make sacrifices for the benefit of other people. I find it hard to understand how some individuals don’t think people are having a negative influence on this planet and that it can just cope with anything we throw at it. But that’s largely it, we think we are above everyone else, but we are not. We think humans can solve everything. I do worry for what the future will be like for my kids, and there’s this teenager who thinks like that too. I can’t really blame her. I can’t help think we are closing the stable door after the horse has bolted tbh, but I applaud her for speaking passionately about what she believes in. Yes people can make changes, but ultimately it’s the big industries and new cleaner mass market technology that would make a bigger impact, it’s such a complex issue tbh but small steps forward and acknowledging the problem are a step in the right direction.

Anyone see that pic of her sailing away and a giant plastic bottle of Evian in the cup holder. :joy: Isn't she supposed to be against plastics etc. as they are killing the oceans.

    And another one:
    image.jpeg

This has very little to do with Greta Thunberg, her views on climate change or her age.

If she was instead spouting some right wing claptrap the same ones that currently object to her will be praising her no end for challenging the status quo and being a true patriot.

Life would be a whole lot easier if people just admitted they couldn’t give a rats arse, rather than going round the houses with meaningless arguments about iPhones.

But she is getting people to 'shame' governments who are doing something though. As I pointed out she has repeatedly targeted us as one of the worse offenders and British kids have been one of the biggest group of kids attacking our governments actions but we are the country who is leading the way. We are basically the only country whose starting point is at greenhouse gas production being at pre-1900 level and our targets exceed the Paris Agreement levels and as I mentioned we have it enshrined in law rather than flimsy agreements of other countries. People should be applauding what the U.K. government has been doing not just recently but all the way back to the 90's

Something I did just find out is she apparently has Aspergers and I do wonder if people are exploiting some of the common characteristics of someone with Aspergers for their own motives.

Ah, there it is, I knew it wouldn't be long.

It all sounds just like the whole Brexit argument again where one side claims the other side are "thick" and "racists" if they don't agree.

It's as predictable as it is laughable.

This is what I hate about social media today. A young girls fighting for a cause she believes in, and adults of a left and right persuasion are using it to point score. People on the right saying she’s been groomed, people on the left enjoying provoking people on the right saying how funny their reaction is. Yet it’s hypocrisy if she was peddling some right wing agenda people on the left would be saying it’s a disgrace that a young girls been manipulated/groomed.

No wonder the worlds going down the pan, sensible debate between opposites has died. It’s who’s horse is the highest now. It’s the same in politics, if you can’t win by being popular win by discrediting the opposition. Instead of debate they throw around words like Racism, xenophobia and antisemitism.

    No, it's fundamentally different.
Brexit is clearly a political/economic issue where whichever side you are on is a matter of personal political opinion. I fundamentally disagree with Brexiteers but I accept their right to have a different opinion from mine.

Climate change is a fact. It's happening and every credible scientist on the planet accepts this and knows that massive change is required. Believing that climate change isn't happening, or isn't a problem or isn't exacerbated by human activity is ridiculous. It's like believing that the earth is flat.

But they don't agree on the level of impact that we are actually having though. The kind of reductions the scientists she is listening to basically assume that all climate change is our doing when the reality is the earth does go through cycles and we are due a warming phase which is what we are most likely going through.

Even if the world went net-zero there is a finite impact we can have on it so going all-in is potential pointless as you get diminishing returns while having a negative economic impact. Lets say if reducing to 40% limits rises to 2 degrees and 80% limits it to 1.8 degrees is it really worth rushing to it achieve 80% or is it better to follow through on a structured longer-term plan to get to 80% (or 100%) that doesn't result in significant issues elsewhere that see things like mass unemployment happening. That's the kind of nuance that these kids are missing, they aren't listening to a broad range of climate change scientists and people like economist, they just listen to the most alarmist who wants us to cut back overnight even if it sends us back to the dark ages

I didn't either. It was only with all the articles about the petulance she showed when Trump showed up which stopped her being the centre of attention that I had seen it mentioned

I don't think they want us to cut back drastically overnight and plunge the world into chaos. They want evidence of proper planning and a concerted effort, including investing in alternatives that could create as many jobs as they lose. They are also, quite rightly, outraged at people like Trump and Bolsonaro who are in positions of great power and are using it to actively reverse the limited ecological progress of the last few years.
As for the 'tantrum', she just stared Trump down. He's much more likely to throw tantrums than she is, as far as I can see.

The Paris Agreement though is a proper plan, it was something using all the evidence and the opinions of a range of scientists as well as working out what was economically possible and that would limit the temperature increase to 2 degrees between now and 2050. The figure they agreed on was 40% reduction which gives time for green tech to mature, become cheaper and more efficient while giving the necessary lead time. Her and the extreme scientists she is taking the lead from want 80% by 2030. When 70% comes from the 'energy' industry and it takes a decade and vast amounts of money to design, build and fully open a new power station that goal is impossible without shutting down power stations without replacements. And Green Energy production is massively inefficient, a typical coal power station produces 2000MW, the latest wind Turbines produce 8KW each max so that's 250 needed to replace coal. And each turbine needs a half a square mile so thats in total 125 sq Miles. To put that into perspective The Isle of White is only 150sq miles. And with limited places that you can place them to ensure they are working for the maximum amount of time and with significant consideration having to put into placement from a Human health pov and the impact on wildlife they just aren't good enough right now to have the kind of impact she wants.

And sure yes there are some 'rougue' leaders being a problem but she largely shys away from attacking the likes of China and US. She prefers to openly attack the UK, the leader in tackling the issue rather than those not pulling their weight. Most likely because of the US and China get a greater free pass even from the most hardcore climate change scientists because as a scientist these two countries are the source of most scientific funding right now so they don't want to call them out and risk funding but we are an easy target especially right now as we are basically disliked by 90% of the world for one reason or another

As for saying she only stared him down, she stopped herself sticking her tongue out at him and got more emotional including crying that she doesn't usually. It's out of charahcter especially taking into account her Aspergers. And no-one is denying Trump is prone to throwing a tantrum, as he actually has on twitter by mocking her

If there was objectivity to begin with there would be very little point in bringing up the widescale double standards/hypocrisy taking place in the first place, mainly because it wouldn't exist. The fact that it does, is clearly widespread, and for the majority seems to be influenced entirely by political agenda as opposed to the topic in hand if anything backs up entirely what you're saying.

Truth is, we all have political bias to some degree, i know I do. Most of us at some point or another also contradict ourselves, I'm sure I've done this on many occasions. Others though let certain agendas dictate every single opinion they hold, and object to this girl for reasons completely unrelated to her work on climate change.

There's literally zero reason for anyone to be offended at bringing this issue up, and the only way it can overcome is to point the problem out, tackle it head on and individuals, on all sides of the political spectrum, accepting accountability for themselves when applicable. When that happens, the well reasoned debate you're clearly an advocate for will become slightly more commonplace.

While she may be a long way from achieving her objective, she has come a long way in a short space of time.

Listened to by the world's leaders, appearing on the cover of Time magazine and now having her own thread on Bantam Talk. Go Greta go.
