One of, if not the greatest thing New Labour did was invest in SureStart Children's Centres. The outreach work they did was fantastic combating a lot of the things you talk about, at source. They've gone. Cuts. Austerity. Shocking.

Even Norman Tebbit was musing not so long ago whether his generation's focus on the individual, rather than a part of community, but as an economic agent had had unforeseen consequences. I think there is something in that. It has resulted in a materialistic obsession and a lack of responsibility for the impact of actions.

 

Couldn't agree more with regards work ethic, but you see stuff kids are doing at 10/11/12 and upwards that you as a kid would not dare do/say because if you got teachers, police officers etc involved by the time your parents had finished with you youd never contemplate doing it again.
Its a touchy subject but disapline at home seems to be a lost art, I heard stuff a the school I worked at for the last 10 years of my working life that children commented to teachers that were embaressing, yet when their parents were brought into school to discuss their child the parent offered little support to the teacher and would quote "my child wouldnt do that".
