At first it was a novelty, now she's becoming tiresome. I'm all for talk on making a better future but her latest speech/publicity stunt is nothing more than emotional blackmail, using a vulnerable teenager to hammer a debatable point is quite sad.

Wonder what she will do when the spot light drifts off her, back to school and catch up on the last 12 months?

I don’t really understand why GROWN men feel threatened by her, and threatened by her message.

If she was my kid, I’d be proud. She’s done more in the last few weeks than most people achieve their lifetimes. Regardless of her message.

But then some raging flag-shagging mouth frother would be on here giving the spiel about how kids are more interested in their Xbox than anything else. Can’t win mate.

Looks like it wasn’t just Aaron Banks she riled up. I find the reaction she gets, quite eye opening.

Raised awareness of climate change about a thousand notches.
Got politicians feeling ashamed about having done so little to address the issues.
Acted as a figurehead for millions of young people to get angry about the crap legacy we're leaving them and got them making a racket about it.
Interesting how the vast majority of climate change deniers/minimizers are either people who make money out of polluting activities. Or older people who won't be around to suffer the serious consequences. Or both.

Regardless of the message, she's still losing.

The problem is she is a kid and as such doesn't really know what she is talking about. She is just parroting what some of the more extreme climate change scientists say but climate change science isn't exactly an area of science that those in it all agree on. They may all agree that it's happening and that we have an impact but exactly how much of it is our fault and how much is the natural cycle and how much we need to restrict climate change is debated.

She also doesn't understand the real world, in theory reducing greenhouse gasses by 80% sounds great but that's in isolation. In the real world, you have other things to consider, 70% of greenhouse gasses are produced by about 100 companies, almost all are in the energy field so you can't just have them cut their greenhouse gas output we have power and travel issues which really would hinder business. There is a decent chance that countries would need rolling brownouts for a good while as the alternative options are either inefficient or just need alot of time put into planning so we wouldn't be able to build enough quickly to replace enough output (And that's ignoring the other issues of some of them for example Wind turbines which generally need to go in areas of natural beauty but are ugly, cause health issues to people living near and have negative impact on some wildlife, especially larger birds such as birds of prey). It's all well and good going all in but if it destroys the economy thats not great.

It's why the Paris Agreement came up with the target of 2 degrees, it takes the views of the whole range of experts and not just the most extreme ones and also takes into account whats viable on an economic sense. Its a sensible and achievable level based on where green tech currently is

What actually annoys me most about her is she keeps lecturing us as a country. Not only are the UK's targets some of the most aggressive and since 1990 they have already been reduced by 40% (We are actually at levels that apart from 2 single year blips in the 1920's we haven't been at since 1900) but we are also the only country to have reductions enshrined in law, a change of leadership in any other country (as we saw with the US) can see it overturned overnight but our's can't. It would take a massive effort to overturn the law. In fact if every county met our levels achieving just a 1.5 degrees by 2030 would be viable. But she holds us up over and over again as an example of failure and outright attacks our countries leadership over it. They can be attacked on many things but this isn't one of them.

Oh and the fact she has got all these hypocritical sheep to jump on the bandwagon. They end up missing days at school, days they could actually be learning things so they can be a positive member of society and maybe even be involving to future advancements that will help with climate change to attend marches, marches that cause disruption for others. Marches that they turn up to in their parent's petrol-guzzling cars and walk around protesting using their mobile phones, tablets. camera and wearing their apple watch all which have had to be charged and will need to be charged when they get home. A home which they will get on their consoles or PC's, will listen to music, surf the internet, watch TV etc all of which uses electricity a good amount coming from the power stations they want to shut down right away. Almost all of them will change their minds if you told them they can only use their tech for an hour a day

    Brilliant post Simon.

If Miss Thunberg read that, she wouldnt have a clue what you were on about

Whoever is pulling her strings should be ashamed of themselves, using a child like this.

By the way, did she row across the Atlantic to get to New York?

Those that are riled up by Greta are almost exclusively right wingers, ironically the same people who often accuse of being 'snowflakes' and dislike young folk for being lazy and unproductive- the exact opposite of the young woman they now feel threatened by .

    Funny how that works.

She hasn’t told us one thing we don’t already know, the things ‘experts’ have been debating with each other for years yet suddenly this 16 year old ‘kid’ comes from nowhere and shes the new messiah. Publicity stunts on catamarans and speeches about ‘stealing her dreams’, give me a break. If she and whoever is really pulling her puppet strings wants to make a shred a difference, go take your roadshow to India and China because thats where the problems of the next generations lie. Let see if they will listen because i doubt it.

I tell you, it's more about de-industrialisation than any climate change bullshit, she, like the rest of us will be long gone before there are any serious issues on this matter, many more than the 11/12 years that these indoctrinated kids are being taught.
And no, she's not getting me riled up, it's just disappointing and sad......

It's not about telling us stuff we don't already know. That's the point - apart from a few crackpot mavericks, scientists have been telling us the realities for decades but we've complacently done very little about it. What Greta has done is to help galvanise youth to start shaming governments into doing something. It may not work but it's a start. And I think that climate change is going to keep getting bigger as a political issue due to pressure from young people.
We've come through a period of political youth apathy in the era of Thatcher and Reagan's children. All the signs are that that is changing and I welcome it.
I take your point about India and China. But the West can't get sanctimonious with them unless it gets its own house in order. We spent a hundred industrial years burning fossil fuels and exploiting the non-industrial world's resources to achieve global economic domination. Now that they are playing catch-up we can't expect them to behave ecologically responsibly unless we do too.
