Have a read of their forum and you might change your mind. Generally thinking we are a small time club with a quiet away following, which they seem to have based on our pre pubescent stone island wearing feckwits who think its ‘banter’ to let off smoke bombs in pubs and inside the ground, the comments are pretty amusing. I agree with you, their support on the day at the ground was good natured but quieter than some of the smaller grounds i’ve been to this season. Nice ground though, they have hot water in Sunderland. And handwash in the bogs, 5 star luxury compared to VP.

Knowing the ball is over the line and trying to conceal it is the same as a striker punching the ball into the net out of the refs view........it’s fecking cheating Jon Mac and you should be ashamed.

O donnell gave them a goal start didn’t he?
What I’m saying is that in the interest of fair play what JM did was to pretend the ball didn’t cross the line. It’s the same as a diving striker gaining an undeserved penalty. It’s CHEATING!!!! which ever way you slice it.

And that says a lot about the game today.

I can give another example where the opposition put the ball out of play for an injury but then the other team score from the restart instead of giving ball back. It’s not in the rules to say you can’t score so why does the ball always get given back?
In the event that a player does score from the restart the ref can and does book the player for unsporting behaviour and also instructs the oppo to allow the ball to be run into the goal at the other end.

Remember DiCanio catching the ball in the area when the keeper was injured instead of knocking it into empty net?

JM should have told the ref it had crossed the line.

Be realistic, that's never going to happen.

Di Canio was a one off and was likely done for his own publicity.

You are talking drivel. What JM was doing was rushing back to the line to try and stop the ball going over it. That isn’t cheating. The fact the ball went over the line when it was retrieved isn’t his fault but the officials for not spotting it. What you are suggesting is that he either just lets it go over the line or that he holds his hands up afterwards and says its a goal. Both are ludicrous.

HAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!! So last game of the season and we need a point to stay up! The ball goes over the line by a fraction and O'Donnell runs over to the ref and says it went in and we lose 1 nil.... We get relegated. Its ok though as O'Donnell was being honest and had he actually tried to stop the ball from going in then that’s cheating.

Flip that, we need a point and Wimbledon need a win and the same thing happens. We get relegated whilst Dons stay up.
Would you just brush it off as part and parcel of the game?

I am with you on this Loyal, and I certainly don’t mind being in the minority with you either. How come they can clamp down on simulated behaviour on outfield players but somehow goalies are excused. He knew it was over the line, and he should have told the ref. I always held Johnny MAC in high regard, no longer.

Rather strangely, Sunderland fans are saying we were the quietest set of fans they've had all season. Ranking the likes of Wycombe and Bristol Rovers "Million times louder".

I know our vocal support away from home has generally been quite poor over the past few years, but with the numbers we have it really shouldn't be.

At what point is the goalkeeper supposed to jsut let the ball go and not bother tring to stop it go over the line? Calling JM a cheat is very harsh.

Of course he has to try and stop it, but if it has gone over the line he has to say so. I know it is an old fashioned concept, but they used to have a rule of ungentlemanly conduct. However, cheating has become part of football and I don’t like it, and now everything is down to the ref or officials and that is why we have so much dissent. In days gone by, I have seen players who tell the ref it wasn’t a pen etc.,

Look at what happened in cricket, it is always viewed as unprofessional and condemned within the game globally. I personally think football also needs to clean its act up. What JMc did is exactly the same as a dive.

Plus the ref should never have been allowed to ref such a big game ie crowd.

He has been relegated to League 2, due to some appalling decision in the West Brom v Villa when he allowed a handled goal to count. He then went on to ref Bury v Oldham match a week later which was also marred with baffling decisions. Hopkin was right on the money, the game was far too big for him and the EFL, need to stop foisting poor refs on our league. He has made far too many errors. The EFL, need to seriously think about training, or sending him on his way.
