There are a lot of similarities between Doyle and Pitman in terms of age, high wages and being out of contract at their respective clubs in the summer. I reckon any difference in outlay Swindon would benefit from in taking Pitman on instead of keeping Doyle would be marginal if at all, so it seems an odd decision to me for them not to agree to pay up and keep Doyle. Pitman might fit in right away and continue where Doyle left off or he might not and the goals could dry up.

I think it was £650 000. I heard that when Villa made their offer the then secretary misunderstood and thought they had offered £65 000. She replied that Leeds had already offered £100 000. Then Villa made their offer clear and I understand that the phrase 'snatched their hand off' was never more appropriate.

Long before Graham Taylor was called a turnip by The Sun, I seriously doubted his football wisdom when he signed Sticks to play alongside Tony Cascarino. You can’t yoke a giraffe to a donkey. He ended up playing 6’7” Sticks on the left wing. Crazy.

    No one now.

West Ham were interested but it's cooled.
Talk of Milan but long shot.

Doing Derby will sell now considering Rooney just joined and they're trying to come from behind to get into the play offs.

Didn't he originally come to City as a left winger ,?.

True but as a all round center forward best I've seen, always destined for League One and an England number 9.
No doubt about it match fixing was wrong but they were poorly paid in comparison with today's players.

Bronco was one of the unlucky ones who got caught. According to The People at the time, there were a lot of others who were involved. They named some who were never brought to court, like Peter Wragg who later played for us. There were rumours about others who were never named. I prefer to remember that wonderful season Bronco had with us, banging then in from everyone angle. His scoring record was one in every three halves of football. Johnny McCole who partnered him was some player too.

    He did
Always remember a cup night at VP against Oldham who were a good side in those days
He played on the wing and terrorized their defence

It'll be interesting to hear the thoughts of Bowyer at this afternoon's press conference. It'd be nice to hear that City have concluded discussions with Swindon and we're looking to integrate the leagues top scorer back into our squad in the hope he can carry on where he left off.

Unfortunately there's a long way to go in this window and there's nothing to stop Swindon putting out sound bites about Doyle in the press, potentially unsettling the player.

Only a ridiculous offer akin to the Hanson deal, where once again we sold to a rival (City have form for this), should see him return to Wiltshire. Hopefully Doyle will want to keep his options open and that would mean staying at City until the end if the season.

Good point. Pitman, will inevitably cost them more - but maybe Pompey are happy to pay a higher proportion meaning the difference is marginal.

I'd have Pitman before Doyle though, I can't see him not scoring - he's amazingly consistent, when picked. Hence I can understand why Lee Power - hasn't battled hard for Doyle

Bowyer's already discussed what the team need to do so Doyle continues his goal quest

I don't get these doubts. There is no way a person as canny as Bowyer is going to talk about Doyle playing in the team, if there are doubts about Doyle wanting to stay

If you're a manager of any ability, it would be easy to turn Doyle's head around so he's back on-side for us - subtle digs about Swindon's reluctance to pay more etc. Then there's the narrative where you admit you realised that a player of his talent needed to get his confidence back elsewhere as it would be wrong to have made him stay - but now we really need you, listen to what the fans are saying etc.

My comments are of course made up - we've no idea what was said, but the point is, there's no reason to think that Doyle still yearns to go back

There's an easy answer to this, he goes where the pay master says he goes. And at this moment in time that is us. No reason that Swindon won't make a revised offer, its obvious they would love him back. We could easily knock any speculation on the head by saying he is not for sale, but an offer for a player out of contract in 6 months? Really dependant on how much Bowyer stresses he wants him in the team and how much Swindon really want him. If they want him badly enough there will be a figure City have in mind as a fair price for a goalscoring striker, but who is a free agent in the summer and will be 32 by this time.

The doubts stem from the comments made by Wellens, hence the reason why I'd like to hear Bowyer say discussions have been concluded. It could be Swindon trying to save face but as has been mentioned, if the shoe was on the other foot I'd expect our board to be putting together a package to get him back.

Nah Bradford don't need to say anything. Bowyer will get asked quested in the PC or on the radio on Saturday about Doyle but it's Swindon that need to save face and kid their fans at the minute.

What makes people think Swindon will now come in with a bid? They've had 6 months to sort and we have decided to recall him, rightly so.

Agreed. I'm not convinced he'll be here at the end of the window but let's see. Things change. Even if our intent is for him to stay and play, if he comes into the side and doesnt score - maybe because we continue to not use him properly - then maybe it would suit all parties for him to go back to Swindon. Of course, if they've brought someone in by then, it may be moot.. .
