Reminds me of excuses used by solicitors to try get their clients off a charge when they know they are bang to rights.

I cannot believe it took them 2 days to think such an excuse up. A 5 year old could have come up with a more plausible excuse

I'm guessing that a five year old would also realise that once in Barnard Castle, there is still the issue of returning to Durham with his family at some stage. That leaves this non-5 year old to conclude that either he was away for more than the 30 mins he claims or that if it was really only 30 mins, his average speed was considerably more than our national speed limit! ;)

I don't care that he drove to his parents, he's reasons were justifiable in my opinion. The Barnard Castle thing is insulting though, insulting that he actually thinks the public is gullible enough to believe such bullsh!t.

If he'd have come out and said, "Look I'm sorry. My wife was feeling crap, it was her Birthday, so we drove to the Castle. It was very quiet and we maintained social distancing. Again I'm sorry, it was a mistake." then I think the majority of people would have thought fair enough. Now, everything thinks the bloke is a complete nobhead.

The speed limit would depend on the roads he was on.
    Its either 70,60,50, 40, 30 or 20.
If he wanged down the A1 then went west to Barnard Castle he may never have exceeded the limit and that could easily explain why he managed approx 30 miles in 30 mins.
Though driving at up to 70 on the A1 to see if you were ok to drive is pure madness.
If indeed that was his real reason for going there.

I doubt he could have made much more of a mess out of this than he has.

Just show some humility and express some level of empathy and move on.

But no he just dug his heels in and made a bigger hole.

Makes you wonder if he has some dirt on BoJo that is keeping him in a job.

Your last line is the key, Boris needs dom to drive his government in achieving brexit etc more than dom needs him otherwise he would be toast by the end of the week.
I have every faith that with these 2 driving the brexit bus the public will be Oven Ready sooner than later.

Seems like Cummings' claim to have warned about pandemic risk on his blog are false. Apparently he only added that bit on 14th April.

    He should resign.

The media are loving it because it gives them something to hit the government with and lets be honest if he did resign they would still be pushing this out, the fact he hasn't gives it more legs. The media know that reporting on good news doesn't really sell papers so they will get their pound of flesh and drag this out for a full week minimum.

He should have just resigned, the government called it a bad judgement and focus on the more important things that need addressing. When someone making the rules, breaks the rules that they expect you to follow then there is no defence.

Sky sending a reporter to his parents house is shameful, but not unexpected.

The damage has been done no, if he resigns from this point onwards it will make no difference.

My friend on Facebook shared a picture of her son from the BBC news. He was one of the paparazzi photographers at his house. Deleted her. I'm all for a free press and this is certainly a public interest story but these photographers are revolting.

There must be thousands of parents who felt unwell and had care of their children. However only a very few will have driven such a distance (if at all) to ‘self isolate’. The vast majority will have stuck to the Government advice to ‘stay at home’. Some single parents would not have had the ability to share the care of a child(ren) with another partner, or had family members living close by, which Cummings had.

What galls me, is that as the Prime Ministers Chief Advisor, then on his return to London, he didn’t discus with Johnson and the Cabinet about his experiences. Surely if his actions were justified, then he and the Government should have shared the benefits of this, with the English public! Why didn’t the Government change it’s policy in early/mid April to allow other parents the opportunity to seek support in a similar fashion!

It is the callous attitude that smacks of the Privileged, moneyed ‘Elite’, being above the rules which govern society, and which they set down, which is rank hypocrisy.
