Yes, your right, there's a lot more work to be done before we can conclude anything from these studies.

Also, whilst I understand the logic and mathematics behind herd immunity, I am far from convinced that this is going to be our way out for this virus.

An effective vaccine remains our best hope, along with improved treatments, to reduce mortality, until that vaccine is ready. In the meantime, we need more and clearer leadership from our government and more restraint and caution from some members of the public.

So, have to wear face masks in shops but in pubs and clubs and restaurants not to mention friut/veg farms and cheap factories etc, anything goes?
    More muddled thinking.

I'm glad somebody is thinking like that! I heard the announcement about having to wear a facemask in what was described as 'retail outlets'. I took that to mean shops and supermarkets but also cafes, takeawayts, pubs and restaurants. And today I heard a Govt minister confirming the shops and supermarkets part but then saying that it would be a matter for the customer to decide in bars, pubs and the like (obviously not when they are drinking!) and it wouldn't be enforced. As you say it's all very muddled. I suppose not introducing the change for another 10 days will allow them to get their thinking straight or maybe even change their mind!

So during peak pandemic we have been ok to wonder round a supermarket without a mask, now with infection rates less than 10% of what they were we have to wear a mask.
But that's not just it because this compulsory mask wearing doesn't start for 11 days so for the next 11 days you can carry on as before.
If you want to visit a shop to buy something say a pair of shoes or some stationery that would take you 10min you need to wear a mask, but after you have bought your shoes you can wonder nextdoor to the pub, spend 3 hours in there and not bother wearing a mask in a very similar enviroment.
You could work in an office of 50 people without the need for a mask, but if you want a sandwich at lunch you will have to put one on to buy the sandwich (unless that sandwich is bought in a pub or restaurant).

Anyone else thing that policy is picked out the national lottery machine?

I'm becoming more and more convinced that people actually WANT to be confused with things. Whenever rules are nuanced there will always be situations where we say "why are they doing x and not y" but unless we want everything to be blanket there will always be things around the edges that can rightly be questioned.

Some of the stuff is probably obvious and has even been said before.

At the peak of the pandemic they wanted people to focus simply on being as far away from others as possible. No real need for a mask if you are 2m+ away. Now they want people to risk getting closer together and when you're taking away the safety net of distance you add in the additional safety of a mask.

Shops, supermarkets and other retail environments are the main locations where people mill around for a prolonged period indoors without being able to keep their distance. Pubs, restaurants, cafe's, offices etc have already been set up to keep people apart with table service, spacing, etc so aren't in the same situation. They might start to be in the same bracket eventually but they definitely aren't at the moment and you'd obviously need to take the mask off to drink or eat anyway so would be unenforceable

It's honestly like people don't want to see any subtlety in the rules and every time they do it is classed as a "muddle", as a society we aren't this binary are we?

Clarity on these things is what everybody needs. When a senior member of the Cabinet, Michael Gove, is saying one day that there is no need to wear a mask in shops and that message is then changed within 24 hours by his boss, is it any surprise that many people are confused? Another Govt minister used an example of a customer going into a cafe to buy a takeaway sandwich would be an example of when a mask must be worn. He couldn't however provide an answer to the question of what about others in the cafe sitting having their lunch? As a country we should have learned from recent examples of crowded beaches, the lack of social distancing on marches, travelling to beauty spots en masse that common sense is in short supply currently. Covid 19 hasn't suddenly gone into hiding. It's there in circulation and clarity on how to minimise the transfer of the virus is therefore of importance to us all. Consistent and clear messages from the Govt in particular is part of that process.

On the day that the rules change then the message will change obviously. How can we expect it not to? That's not confusion though, it would be the same for absolutely anything.

There always has to be en element of common sense because the government can't, and more importantly shouldn't, hold peoples hands through every single aspect of their lives. You're dead right, the virus is still out there but people still have a responsibility to apply the rules to their own situations.

The messages are clear but we shouldn't expect them to be all encompassing.

I have defended the government and seen that the guidance they have given previously was all about acting with common sense. Keep 2m apart, you can exercise but don't take the piss etc.

This latest mask advice seems to be reactionary as if they have had a polling company see what the public thing and then implemented it that way.

It's been 3 months that people have wondered round supermarkets without the need for masks, there is no change in the supermarkets so why are masks suddenly needed? It's like advising on the use of condoms during the baby shower.

There clearly is a change though. They've taken all the 2m obligations down as a response to the 1m+ change and at least 4 of the big supermarkets have changed their rules - such as one way systems - following that within the last week.

I think they've always wanted people wearing PPE as widely as possible, but knew there was no way to meet demand. Look how long it took to build up to meet the needs of medical and care staff, the last thing they wanted was even more demand while people were mainly locked down. So they strung along a message of 'the science is unclear'. With a straight face.

All I’d like to know is who’s going to enforce the mandatory wearing of masks?
