Thankfully we have a chance to start again with central midfield.
I do think we will try and sign Banks and Critchlow up permanently. I wouldn’t be surprised if we went back for Wright now Plymouth have gone up.
I’d fully expect us to bring in a new left back and someone to offer competition to Halliday.
I think we will offer Cook 12 months but I’d be looking to somehow ditch Oliver and bring in someone who will actually chip in with goals.
All the out of contract players bar Cook I’d be letting go but I do think Gilly will be offered new terms. I don’t want to see ever see a midfield 3 of Gilly, Clayton and Smallwood again.

 

To say we had a pretty large squad most of them didn’t appear to be trusted by the end of the season as his team rarely altered. Great when you’re winning games consistently but curious when you’re struggling to.
Many must seem to be not wanted based on the reluctance to pick them.

 

Agree 100% he never takes any ownership/responsibility. He's protected in interviews as if hes doing us a favour being manager and you cannot question anything he does.

I think he will already be signed up somewhere. Cannot tell me with 31 goals and could sign for someone else since January he hasn't sorted a move out already and just not announced it till our season was finished.

That 3 in midfield should never be seen again. Slow and zero creativity. Needing a goal today smallwood first instinct still is to pass backwards.

 

I am sure your right apart from Maybe Kelly and possibly players like East ever since his appointment the target was exclusively promotion this season and player were recruited to that aim. The head of recruitment was appointed at about the same time so Hughes had ample opportunity to pass on to him what type of players he wanted and needed however it’s clear that he has failed to get it right. We have to hope he has learned from it. But can a leopard change its spots?

Back home. Didn’t deserve anything else over the two legs and probably the season. Such little go forward. Mistakes always in them. Couple of crap goals given away. Tbh, today was like a lot of this season’s games. City dull as, turgid, keep Cook out the game and it’s game over.

we have no chance next season, whichever way we summarise this season it is a massive opportunity missed and much of the blame for not finishing in the top 3 has to lie with Hughes for not taking every single game by the scruff of the next, especially at home.

 

On that basis why are Newcastle playing well when they are owned by a regime that murders people and know fook all about football.

Bottle it when it matters. Gillingham, Crewe, now Carlisle as well as all the other leads especially at home throughout the season.

Too negative, too scared to lose as opposed to utilising our talent and letting us go and score 3 or 4 every week as we all know we are capable of doing.

We need a manager who isn’t afraid to attack.

 

No idea RT , but clearly something doesn’t add up when their gates are relatively poor this year.

 

I think Chapman has been a big miss and of course Wright before they both added balance. Also unfortunately I think Walker missed much of preseason and the early games and his fitness hasn’t been good enough.

 

Well I must say that was awful and the only positive for me was at how glad I was to have missed out on a ticket for today.

I started a thread last October time asking when this team would click and we never did. Funnily enough I’m not too despondent about the result because we’ve never looked like a good side all season. We looked better when East came on, which again begs the question why he hasn’t started more games. This side is full of errors and lacking in concentration over 90 minutes. Only once have we given any team a good hiding over 90 minutes and that was against a Sutton side with nothing to play for. We’ve flattered to deceive, had the usual “we know what we have to do” drivel and failed to show up.

We wasted the first third of the season playing walking football across the back, before switching to a diamond with 2 up front. Then lost Derbyshire and replaced him with a non effective youngster from Burnley. We’re stacked with players who just aren’t good enough or haven’t been given a fair crack of the whip. Time to say goodbye to a fair few of these next season, particularly in midfield. This isn’t on the players, it’s on Hughes. For a man who played in some of the most attacking, fluid sides in Europe, he’s brought a painful brand of football to watch and I don’t see him changing.
