Seems as though EU countries are far more efficient in processing Asylum Claims than the UK. Also far higher percentage having their applications rejected. Perhaps rather than having a go at the EU, their stance is far more robust and much higher numbers are being processed, far quicker!
Given the UK’s poor performance, it is not surprising that it may seem an attractive destination for migrants, seeking asylum. In reality the party of Brexit have failed yet again.

Last year, the UK authorities made initial decisions on 18,699 asylum applications and granted 14,211 of them - 76%.

In the same period, Germany made 197,540 asylum decisions, and granted more than 50% of them.

France - a country with a similar-sized population to the UK - made 129,735 decisions, and also granted more than 50%.

I never read any of that in the Daily Express or Mail! There seems to be a general impression created by certain newspapers that every asylum seeker arriving in Europe heads to the UK, the land of milk and honey. That's simply not true.

In reality, around 1,000,000 asylum seekers arrived in Europe last year. That resulted in nearly 220,000 asylum applications in Germany, nearly 140,000 asylum applications in France, 115,000 in Spain and 105,000 in little Austria. Meanwhile the UK received 72,000 asylum applications. Our so-called asylum issue is less about the number of asylum seekers being housed in hotels or wherever and more about the poor management of the asylum application process which leads to that situation. Since the numbers started to increase around 2016, the UK has failed miserably to get on top of the application numbers. It wasn't of course helped by the swathes of civil servants transferred from the Home Office (who proess asylum applications) to a new Govt department set up to deal with another calamitous decision. In amongst her gaslighting on Rwanda, I've never heard Braverman explain why we are so bad at processing asylum applications. I guess it must be those workshy civil servants rather than the inept Govt's policies and decision making.

Rishi's plan to clear the backlog going well too......

Rishi Sunak’s pledge to clear ‘legacy’ asylum backlog on course to fail, watchdog finds | The Independent

If they got their act together and processed them quicker then maybe they wouldn't spend as much on housing seekers in hotels, barges, student housing, airfields etc.....

But tell you what will do it....solving the Inheritance Tax problem!!!

    Whilst people struggle.....

This is a very telling programme. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001qgww
    A true state of chaos.

The Brexiters had absolutely ‘No Plan’!

A series of interviews which shows utter chaos by those who have lead the country.

They (the Tories) deliver the ‘dirt’ on each other.

    Totally incompetent.

We are paying the price of incredible naivety!

Yes, watched all 3 programmes!! It is extremely worrying when you see the level of incompetency that has governed our country for the last few years. Meanwhile we're all left to pick up the tab....even for Boris's recent defence for misleading the House, despite him picking up multi millions for his after dinner speaking!!

    Just read this on t'interweb:

"The Refugee Convention prevents people being returned to countries where they are at risk, and Brexit saw the UK cut out of an EU asylum returns deal allowing people to be transferred to countries they had passed through en-route to Britain.

The UK also lost access to the Eurodac asylum database, which holds fingerprints and other records showing whether individuals have claimed protection elsewhere."

So what really was the plan on taking back our borders when we seem to have cut off our nose.....?

Good piece Ian, you'd have thought the likes of Cameron and Osbourne would have used facts rather than the hypothetical stuff they came up with.

Maybe they didn't get expect the lies and make believe that came from the Brexit camp. How our politics and society has changed since 2016 is a shame.

Right now though we ar fuct. We need to plan for life outside the EU and also try rebuild the relationship. Both sides need to grow up before we become like Argentina or other mismanaged countries

My point was at least going back they could have pointed out to these sort of things rather than the scare tactics they tried to use, and yes both sides were as bad, unfortunately none of the early predictions from Cameron or Osbourne actually happened.

This is an interesting series. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0gd25kn It looks at how the concept and actuality of Great Britain and the United Kingdom formed.
Apparently in 1973 the United Kingdom was one of the most equal societies in the world. Fragmentation is now a factor, arguably the nationalists in some constituent parts of the current UK will see leaving the EU as a precursor to leaving the UK. If that happens then the power of London is likely to see the further impoverishment of the North.

    Brexit.

The unflushable turd that keeps breaking into more and more chunks with every yank of the chain.

So now import tax that massively affects smaller importers, thus benefiting big companies exponentially, AGAIN.

Hands up who fell for the idea Rees Mogg, Farage and Johnson had your best interests at heart, and Brexit would be a real winner?

Oh that is comedy gold. The government line 'it will pay for world class border controls' lol. Just jump on a dinghy and they'll literally escort you to the land of milk and honey. As I've said elsewhere I'm done with all this crap. When will people see through this?

Just found out with my wife's family originating from Germany she can apply for a German passport (her cousin already has one). With my lad doing German at University all I need to do is tag along with the wife and I'm out of here lol.

Make sure she gets both passports, then she can use one to go to Cuba, and the other to go to America with no issues haha
