Wonder how many EU member countries are watching this whole saga and waiting to see what happens before they have their own referendums on leaving.

No, the suggestion that we may be influenced by ANY media sources, my views are partly based on the disgusting behaviour of the dictatorial EU, no deal should have been on the table from day1 even if it was not our intention to use it..

I agree. But that's the entirely predictable result of having a simplistic In/Out referendum in which the exact meaning of Out is not defined. And then compounding the idiocy by triggering Art.50, thereby starting the clock ticking, before agreeing domestically what you are trying to achieve.

This shambles is the inevitable consequence of those two monumental blunders.

It's the old cliche bingo again. On one side we have such classics as 'Daily mail', 'Waycism','£350 million on the side of a bus' etc. On the other side belters like 'bluddy foriners takin r jobs', 'WE didn't liberate Europe so they could tell us what to do', 'give us our country back etc. Lots of other jaw dropping crap. Meanwhile, the rich get richer while laughing at everybody else.

Which would have achieved what, precisely?
Do you honestly believe that the "dictatorial EU" would have caved in to us threatening to walk away without a deal? There's as much chance of that as Boris winning a Best Diplomat prize.

" caved in " suggests that they had a choice, they shouldn't have, we tell them we are going and what they do about it is up to them...

Just given myself a headache reading through this thread. My thoughts (for what they're worth) are that the EU cannot be seen to give us a good deal because the EU would fall apart. We are probably the first of many.

What they would have done about it is waved us off, said 'cheerio' and shut the door behind us.
You may think that would be fine, but most people realise that a No Deal Brexit is detrimental for them, but disastrous for us.

There will be no other option if as they say they will not move on the back stop situation, would you accept the deal as it stands ?, even the Labour party say no.
I was one of the first to post on here after she brought the original deal to parliament, I said if she could get the EU to say when we feel the back stop is not required any more that would get me to accept the deal,
I'm sorry Steve I don't trust the EU to let us leave even when they can see the problem with the Irish border is not insurmountable.

I agree, there has to be reward for bettering ones self. My gripe with that is MPs reward themselves for utter abject failure, in no other business would they get away with it. And while people with ulterior motives argue about what was written on the side of a red bus the real culprits in all this mess just snigger while working out how to skim more expenses to add to their overpaid wages. A country run by utter buffoons.

    Things were changing anyway, even if the remainers had won;

The EU wants EVERY EU country to be in the eurozone and have the euro as its currency, that includes us and sweden.

Leavers have been tarred with the living in the past brush but remainers need to accept the EU is changing too.

If we had let the EU sort us out after the banking crisis 2008, the way they dealt with Greece and Spain, massive public sector cuts and interest rates hikes- which would have really caused us problems with our high home ownership then the referendum could easily have become a landslide.

The UK is still around the 5th? largest economy, lets start acting like it!- mps and mediots take note.

I agree and that is the main reason the EU have got to show unity, 4 more months and we will see what other EU countries think of Angela Merkel's open borders ETC, we are seeing the rise of the ultra right and unfortunately it's been self inflicted, in all seriousness does anyone believe the disruption we are seeing in France is all down to a hike in fuel prices.

The backstop is only necessary until a long term trade deal is signed that doesn't involve border checks for all goods. If that gets signed then the backstop would end. But if such a deal can't be agreed then the backstop (ie customs union) remains in place to avoid a hard Irish border.
Remember, the EU only wanted the backstop to apply to Norn Ireland - it was May that said we'd have it apply to the whole UK, so as not to upset the DUP who are propping her up .
How is the border issue 'not insurmountable'? It looks pretty insurmountable to me. No one wants a hard border, the DUP refuse to be treated differently from the rest of the UK and the EU don't want a bloody great open back door if we can't agree a trade deal without border checks. So the backstop is the only way the EU can protect itself.

I posted it's not insurmountable, if it was then we would never exit the back stop, of course she has to keep the DUP sweet.
I'm not saying the EU aren't correct in insisting the back stop stays until it is proved it could be ended, the general consensus is that is a way to keep us in the Custom Union and that suites them and not us ?
You didn't answer my question Steve.
