‘Certain’, I anticipate is comparable with ‘beyond reasonable doubt’. It is a very high threshold. If there is any reasonable doubt, then a Judge in a trial would point this out to a Jury.
In the handball incident, there was no injury to an opposing player, no other law was broken. My understanding was that the powers would not arrive at what could be seen as a draconian decision, unless there was absolute certainty. There is no transparency, no explanation, rather a primitive process. Did the referee even seek the views of his assistant (no longer lines people)?
In effect Judge, Jury and as near as damn it executioner.

Pen or no pen we simply cannot rely on sub standard officials to get these decisions right can we ?????
On the whole they are very poor and it all stems from the Premier league who even with the help of VAR continue to make poor calls :( now until that’s sorted out then sadly this will continue to filter down the divisions .................. mark my word yet again come 3pm on Saturday another sub standard ref will grace is with his performance .............. we simply have to go out and win games knowing that we ain’t gonna get anything from these so called officials

Looked to be a rather harsh decision, but as many have said, we shouldn't have been in the position of defending only a 1 goal lead. Cook has half our league goals so far; we need the rest of the side to contribute more. Wright looks like he could do so, but the midfielders and especially the defenders need to do more (or even, anything at all).

The one problem I see with any sort of video review system is that refereeing might actually get worse: will there be as much motivation to get calls right the first time when you know that you, or somebody else, will be able to review the play at leisure, from a variety of angles and speeds? It has been used in various sports here for quite some time now; I only care about hockey and baseball, and it seems to me that the quality of the officials has diminished. Granted, this is just a highly unscientific 'feeling.'

Penalty was soft IMO but we had enough of the game and enough chances to get a second goal well before the penalty.

I actually thought some of the approach play and our control of possession, particularly first half, was the best I’ve seen this season given the opposition. Just a shame we don’t seem to be able to sustain it for a full game and/or react to opposition changes. I do wonder sometimes if Hughes has his system and sticks to it regardless of the situation. A few times we’ve seen the opposition change things around and wrestle the game from us and we’ve made like for like changes without changing tactically to address the issue.

Not at all but we can usually tell by the players reaction.

So we've now had an official apology that the ref should not have awarded a penalty. Without awarding us the extra 2 points we should have had this just rubs salt in the wound and is meaningless in the context of it

I agree. Empty apologies. He had no sight of that incident and went with the away fans. For me this wasn’t just a mistake which happens but all refs should know if they didn’t see it then they should not award game changing penalty. The timing of it gave us no chance to rectify his “mistake”

Never looked like a penalty at all. Terrible decision that could be the difference between finishing autos/playoffs/outside the top seven.

Refereeing will not improve untill we bring in top European refferees and the FA takes the referee organisation to task over standards of training and the bar is raised over qualifying to take charge of games. The standard at the moment is to low and let's some poor refs at games making mistakes that cost clubs precious points

i think the bar is low due to lack of interest especially at the lower levels
